[Star Trek] What was Bajor like before the Cardassian occupation?

r/

What would Bajor be like if it hadn’t been occupied by the Cardassians? Is there a source that shows this?

We can make inferences but I don’t know of any actual proof.

Bajorans were deeply religious prior to the invasion. After the occupation and during the events of the show Deep Space 9, they were ruled by a theocratic government. They were also pacifists and extremely peaceful prior to their guerilla rebellion.

I think it would be like living in the Papal States or the Vatican City. However said papacy is the dejure government of the entire planet of Bajor. Most of the details will be similar to what we see in the show as they would have very little need to change the actual political structure of their clerical ruling class.

However they would be less militarily inclined.

A quiet backwater planet fully aware of the wider galaxy, but content to stay out of it known largely for its contribution to the arts. It was ‘primitive’ as far as space faring species went, despite having a large amount of natural resources, and unable to stand up to Cardassia, which itself was a second tier power compared to something like the Federation.

It was either a theocracy ruled by its religious leaders, or close to it, where they had massive influence on the population. It also had a strict caste system in place with distinct ranks within it that people were to respect, ie the a lower caste Te’nari was expected to show deference to the Ih’valla caste of artists.

I’m not sure it’d be as ideal as people make it out to be… To be clear not trying to excuse the Cardassians’ appalling behaviour.

They had the D’Jara (spelling?) caste system, apparently they could even kill people who were of “unclean” caste and tried to do work “above” their station.

However they were said overall to be quite peaceful. On the other hand, we know they weren’t free of internal strife or tensions, as we had various Bajoran peoples squabbling and being forced to resort to treaties etc, with factions like the Paqu and Navot having ongoing conflicts, possibly the conflict being Pre-Occupation.

Despite the fact his argument was entirely self-serving, selfish, prejudiced, biased and the man was pure evil, I think Dukat did make some good points when he said they were parochial and choking on their own isolation.
