Star Wars is not sci-fi

r/

Its fantasy with the veneer of sci-fi. The evil, super powerful dark wizard is using his seemingly endless army of mindless, faceless soldiers to conquer the world. The guy believed to be the “chosen one” who was supposed to defeat the dark wizard actually ends up succumbing to the powers of darkness and becomes the evil wizard’s greatest warrior, the dark knight.

They literally have an order of knights, everybody fights with magical swords powered by magical crystals then also just use straight up magic. Sure you could argue that sci-fi and fantasy are just 2 sides of the same coin but this is basically a one for one to classic fantasy.

Umm it’s considered one of the seminal sci-fi works.

What is sci-fi that Star Wars isn’t doing?

    No one thinks this anymore.

I mean Sci-fi and fantasy are 2 sides to the same coin, they are both fiction, that is why they are grouped together most of the time, the difference is that sci-fi has well science fiction elements, and fantasy is well magic and stuff.

Star Wars is not fantasy, as it has clear science fiction elements, which fantasy does not, at least not to this degree.

Common issue: when you hold a magnifying glass up to Sci-Fi as a genre, it’s nearly all fantasy. True Sci-Fi is hard to find. I’m of the opinion it doesn’t exist at all. That said I’m comfortable considering “Sci-Fi” to refer to “works made to explore a premise” or works with the set dressing you’d expect.
