[Starcraft] Do feral zerg attack each other?

r/

Feral zerg seems to show up a lot in Starcraft. Even more as the time went on becoming the next antagonists.

In the Starcraft novels the death of the cerebrate Zasz caused the Garm brood to turn on themselves. Basically destroying their own hive with zerglings killing other zerglings.

Yet all the time in the games the feral zerg seem to operate like a player. They have bases, units, and attack as a group. They seem to mostly be hostile to non feral zerg, including zerg currently under someone else’s control.

Then of course there are newer depictions where they follow psi emitters. They continue to invade worlds as a swarm.

There’s a fan theory that feral zerg just kind of keep on with whatever the last order they were given is, but the loss of a commanding force means they aren’t as discerning. So Garm’s brood was told to attack and when Garm died, they just attacked everything.

This theory exists because it just kind of varies how a brood will react. Scar was essentially an “alpha” mutalisk that lived with a swarm. They were basically just dangerous animals that attacked animals and humans for food. Similarly, another group was guarding and feeding on the Overmind’s corpse. This implies some zerg just return to animal instinct.

Then you have Green Eyes and Purple Eyes who were overlords so old that they were once Gargantis proximae, the species that became the overlords after assimilation. They regained their sapience and memories of being Gargantis proximae, including the fact that they were mates. When Purple Eyes is killed, Green Eyes takes control of the feral zerg nearby and begins hunting down the Terrans responsible.
