”Stars” from today don’t feel like stars anymore

r/

The abundant amount of famous people compared to what it was until 2010 felt different compared to what it was now. You’ve had people like Justin Timberlake, Robin Williams or Christina Aguilera that felt so ”out of this world” that becoming a star was barely something I could comprehend.

We now live in an age where it’s almost feasible to say that you want to become a Youtube or TikTok star and people might actually find it a realistic goal ”if you just put your mind to it”.

Starhood is so small now that I’m barely ever impressed anymore.

You’re not wrong but this is probably a good thing.

Man that is one hell of a list of stars you got there.

You’re just getting older. It’s best to accept it gracefully

What’s the definition of a star, anyway? Like, what separates Justin Timberlake from Freddie Prinz Jr? Or Timberlake from Paul Newman?

Odd list of stars but Hollywood has been moving frome the Star driven model for some time. Now they’re driven by franchises and IP’s

Take a lot of Marvel and SW slop fir example. It doesn’t really matter whis in them because its the IP that drives ticket sales.

Sure there’s actors that are well known but they’re not “stars” like in years past

I kind of agree. I think fame is a lot easier and cheaper to come by now, but it also fades quicker. Plus social media has ruined the mystique of celebrities.

I think the simple explanation is those YouTubers/TikTokers aren’t stars, even if they’re internet famous. Fame is not equivalent to stardom. Take actual stars like Taylor Swift and Adele and you’ll see stardom is alive and well as its ever been.

If you go back far enough, you’ll find stars that actually had interesting lives before and during their becoming stars.
Some would make an interesting movie all by themselves.

I know of one who was a wanted man by the Brits for his work in the IRA.

Another served in war, was a circus strongman and fought Jack Johnson. All before winning best actor Oscar!

Burt Lancaster was a circus acrobat.

I know, I know. Who was Burt Lancaster.

Swift is the most star there ever was.

There were mediocre stars back then too, it’s just that we forgot about them.

Also, when Aguilera etc hit, people said the same thing and had nostalgia for “real” stars like Madonna and MJ.
