Kung Fu movies didn’t get popular in Hong Kong until the 70s. They didn’t really start importing them to America until the late 70s early 80s and they were seen as niche and kinda nerdy. I doubt Hopper has any real knowledge of martial arts beyond maybe seeing one of these films once.
If anything he might have been a boxer in his youth, but he doesn’t use those skills to my knowledge. So yes I’d have to agree that he’s not trained to fight. He’s probably just got a lot of firsthand training from actual fights.
Probably not. His early army training might have covered them “by the way,” and it might have been something optional when he became a NYC cop.
As a sheriff in 1980’s small-town Indiana, it’s not something that’s likely to come up, let alone often. In another 10-15 years, things like karate and taekwondo studios started becoming more common.
