Tabasco is hands down the undisputed champion of the absolute worst commercially popular hot sauces available.

r/

I love hot sauces, currently taking up 2 entire refrigerator door shelves with it. Tabasco is not good. It’s hot vinegar, that’s it. Zero flavor other than vinegar and a burning lip. Crystal is what Tabasco wishes it could be. Anyone that thinks Tabasco has a single ounce of flavor outside of Vinegar is gaslighting themselves in to thinking it’s good because it’s got the best marketing and has been around forever. If you LOVE vinegar, then hell yeah, Tabasco is for you. If you like literally any other flavor in a hot sauce, then try something else. Tabasco sucks.

EDIT: Wow people can great real creative with their insults haha 😅 and apparently I’m a blasphemer for refrigerating my hot sauce, so that was fun to learn. Jokes on you, I’m going to go drink a whole pint of all my COLD hot sauces mixed together, just to prove my love for hot sauce and establish my dominance as Grand Master Authority on all things hot sauce!

It is has its place. But I don’t love it because It’s a terrible daily driver but what it’s good on its great on. Grilled clams, clam chowder, paella, gumbo, jambalaya.

Lay off my chipotle and habanero

  5. P0ster_Nutbag Avatar

I always found Tabasco to be incredibly mild as far as heat and taste goes. Very much agree that it’s more or less just slightly seasoned vinegar. With all the fantastic hot sauces that are even available in most supermarkets nowadays, Tabasco really just doesn’t cut it.

  6. JimmyGymGym1 Avatar

Tabasco in clam chowder is the best!

  7. okokokok78 Avatar

U are really 99% right but for raw oysters, Tabasco seems to be the right condiment that no other hot sauce would work

  8. Belnak Avatar

I’m not a fan, but I can say that it’s the only way to make the Omelet with cheese MRE palpable.

  9. Simple_State_9444 Avatar

Hot sauce is supposed to be flavored vinegar. If I wanted to taste peppers I would buy peppers!!

  10. windfujin Avatar

I don’t think you know what undisputed means

  11. CallmeKahn Avatar

I prefer Cholula, but Tabasco has a place on my eggs and a few other dishes. Bit harsh to say folks are gaslighting themselves.

  12. Ccarr6453 Avatar

Tabasco has a ton of flavor outside of the heat, primarily salt and vinegar/brightness.
I find a lot of food that I want to add hot sauce to needs heat, as well as commonly salt and vinegar, but I like my food extra bright/punchy.

  13. AssignmentNo8361 Avatar

The green one is okay in a bind, like at Chipotle. However, literally any other brand is better.

I think it’s a Midwestern thing where people act like they like hot sauce and think they’re bold by using the Fire sauce at Taco Bell

  14. LGNDclark Avatar

It’s no bs, 3 ingredients. All from known sources.

  15. ApprehensiveAd5446 Avatar

Tabasco is like an old friend to me. There was a bottle in every MRE I ever had, and it made many of them better.

Frank’s is my go-to now. Perfect for wings or whatever I need some heat on.

  16. Darth_Queso_ Avatar

Jalapeno Tabasco and smoked Tabasco are sooo good

  18. MechaSkippy Avatar

Original Tabasco on oysters with horseradish on top of a saltine is sublime. Other than some drinks where Tabasco is called for and has the right flavor profile I think I agree. Which I guess means that it works well as an ingredient.

Some if their other sauces in their lineup are great, though. Chipotle and Habanero are wonderful.

  19. amstrumpet Avatar

Chipotle Tabasco is the GOAT though

  20. Ajacied312 Avatar

I’d say it has its place on certain dishes, especially breakfast food (eggs, hash browns), but other hot sauces are definitely better.

  21. G4-Dualie Avatar

Tobasco is a cornerstone of American hot sauces and has been around since the 1870s

Granted, compared to today’s hot sauces, Tobasco is pretty mild by comparison but it’s flavor is unique.

  22. Left_Lengthiness_433 Avatar

I think you’ll find that this is not an unpopular opinion. There are a lot of food snobs these days who will agree with you, just because it’s mass produced and widely available.

  23. 1Yawnz Avatar

Sounds like you hate vinegar lol

  24. Premium333 Avatar

Definitely upvoting this. You are a snob or a madman and perhaps both!

99% of the time, a different sauce is better. But there are dishes that Tabasco is the perfect fit for…. And to say that it has no other flavor but burn and vinegar is crazy. It tastes of their breed of peppers and viengar exclusively, ehich is an incredibly simply and clean sauce that livens up what it is added to without adding anything bonus.

Plus, have you ever had a club cracker with a slap of butter and a splash of Tabasco. It’s a delicious poor-mans amuse-bouche. In other words, it hits the high notes and gets the palate ready for the meal to come.

  25. sarcasticorange Avatar

Dude. It has 3 ingredients, vinegar, salt, and red peppers.

If you need those flavors, then it is great. If you need something else, use something else. It isn’t supposed to be the only sauce.

  26. Adventurous_Law9767 Avatar

People shit on Tobasco, but I take it for what it is: an acceptable generic hot sauce. It’s by far not my favorite, and I prefer their variants like extra hot, chipotle…

If I went over to someone’s house and they had Tabasco as the only hot sauce in their fridge, I’d still be happy… But I would probably buy them some better hot sauces from the lineups on the show hot ones. Some of those are really fucking good.

You are spot on in your description of it.

  27. Nolivard Avatar

    Crystal is the G.O.A.T.

  28. JustACasualFan Avatar

I love vinegar (I think Frank’s kicks ass) yet Tabasco is hot garbage

  29. PancakeParty98 Avatar

What is this phenomenon where liking hot sauces compels you to spew the most fart-sniffingly condescending takes imaginable?

I’m afraid of trying more hot sauces at this point, I feel like if I buy one more bottle my eyes will roll back and I’ll start yelling at strangers about how they’re stupid for using black pepper on eggs.

  30. Medium_Muffin_7176 Avatar

    You shouldn’t refrigerate hot sauce.

  31. G6U7A1M Avatar

Original Tabasco is made of peppers, salt, and vinegar. That’s it. Not looking for whispers of caramel and violets with a lingering finish of toffee and blueberries. Try the flavored Tabasco.

  32. Hanshee Avatar

Tobasco tastes like home for me. They got their sauce in the home of every American and now it’s my childhood

  33. Tobias---Funke Avatar

    Tabascos sriracha is really bad!

  34. Suspicious-Loquat594 Avatar

Idk dude. Green tabasco on hashbrowns / scrambled eggs at ihop always tastes good to me.

  35. superstonkape Avatar

I really like original tobasco for biscuits and gravy or mixed with ketchup for home fries/hashbrowns and basically NEVER use it otherwise

I do like their green and chipotle flavors though

  36. lorifieldsbriggs Avatar

I must be biased because I live like 40 minutes from Avery Island where it’s made, but take my upvote because I disagree.

  37. Optimal_Passenger_89 Avatar

Tabasco with my hashbrowns and eggs. Also quite good on oysters but that’s cuz of the vinegar

  38. fendaar Avatar

It depends on what I’m eating. I love it on a fried egg yolk.

  39. Fantastic_While_ Avatar

You clearly have not tried that weird shit in small bottles that they sell for a dollar with brand names that dont even come up in google.

  40. Phoenixfox119 Avatar

There’s a lot to process here, hot sauce doesn’t have to be gate kept, you don’t have to use it, I wouldn’t say hot sauce really needs to meet a certain criteria, at many restaurants you will see malt vinegar on the table as like Tabasco sauce it was a common condiment for decades, we also used to have some “sauce” that was just peppers soaking in vinegar, you can use the slightly flavored vinegar as a condiment or pop a couple peppers out and add it to your food. Tabasco also does have a lot of pepper flavor and heat you probably just don’t like it enough to care to notice.

To me Franks, Louisiana, Crystal and other hot sauces kind of suck, they don’t have any heat, just pepper and vinegar.

Tabasco isn’t something I use often but I feel like it shines in certain places particularly breakfast for me.

  41. WheresFlatJelly Avatar

    My eggs kinda like it

  42. pizzapizzamesohungry Avatar

Taco Bell hot sauce is the best. Haha.

  43. olhado47 Avatar

  44. DarkDragon7 Avatar

I fucking love Tabasco 10/10 for me. But I do love some artisanal sauces, mainly my own. Commercial sauces I like are sriracha, el yucateco and not tapatio or Cholula, yuk.

  45. TheSpanishImposition Avatar

    Hot vinegar? Sounds good.

  46. OmNomChompsky Avatar

This is a trash take. Tabasco has a lot of flavor and very little heat. You just don’t like the flavor.

Tabasco is the undisputed KING of widely commercially available hotsauce.

  47. NativePlant870 Avatar

    You’re just wrong

  48. alloutofbees Avatar

    That’s not what gaslighting is

  50. Chicken-n-Biscuits Avatar

Hardly an unpopular opinion. Every edgy contrarian choad in the western US agrees with you.

  51. AchtungCloud Avatar

You hate Tabasco sauce because all it is is hot vinegar….well yeah, that’s why it’s great.

  52. mzialendrea Avatar

    Tapatio curb stomps Tabasco.

  53. keetojm Avatar

    Works well with eggs. Otherwise…….

  54. despitegirls Avatar

I would agree it’s one of the worst but honestly if anyone has more than a handful of sauces in their fridge, they really aren’t going to be the target audience for Tabasco. Once you’ve had some sauces with a better flavor, or a different species of pepper, Tabasco might still have it’s place but likely won’t be the one you reach for often.

  55. bleh-apathetic Avatar

Vinegar is fuckin great and your opinion is terrible. Signed, someone who also has 20 hot sauces on deck.

  56. EloquentGoose Avatar

AKSHUALLYYYYYYYY It’s a hot pepper sauce, not “hot sauce”.

    Argument invalidated 🤓

  57. boiled_leeks Avatar

I read tobacco instead of Tabasco and for a second I was really proud of you and your unhinged take 👏

  58. Normal_Choice9322 Avatar

It’s junk. It’s what we used back decades ago when there were no other choices

    Would never use it today

  59. Bitter-Basket Avatar

Crystal has a brighter flavor. But Tabasco holds up as a quality choice in the Louisiana category of hot sauces. I mean, saying a Louisiana sauce is “hot vinegar” is like complaining a lemon is sour. And comparing Tabasco to a Mexican, Panamanian, Caribbean or any other category is an amateur move. They are different products.

  60. Maedeuggi Avatar

AMEN brother! Tabasco is probably the reason so many other hot sauces have vinegar in them. I hate them all.

  61. BrowserOfWares Avatar

The started putting little packets of Tabasco in army rations. And let me tell you it felt like a gift from god.

  62. nahtfitaint Avatar

    Downvoted, not unpopular, tobasco sucks.

  63. strattino Avatar

Agreed. Not a fan of their red sauce. I really, really like their Jalapeno one, but at that point it’s not really Tabasco

  64. WannabeF1 Avatar

TIL there are hot sauce snobs…

  65. puts_on_rddt Avatar

The chipotle one isn’t too bad to throw on a random burrito.

  66. tsnorquist Avatar

Chipotle Tabasco is one of if not the best sauce available. It goes on anything!

  67. WhiskeyDickCheese Avatar

Tabasco and eggs, that’s my shit.

  68. BigCarBill Avatar

I’ve said this a few times. Tabasco is fantastic when mixed with another condiment. Ketchup, mayo, sour cream.

Try fries with ketchup with Tabasco mixed in. Mayo and Tabasco on a sandwich, or fries too.

Whatever you put sour cream on, mix in Tabasco with it.

  69. VariationBasic8804 Avatar

  73. WIXV Avatar

Tabasco and scrambled eggs (ultimate duo for me)

  74. RealisticBox1 Avatar

I refrigerate my hot sauces. I only have one shelf, with like a dozen there now. Tobasco isnt on my shelf. I agree, tobasco is trash, and refrigerating condiments is largely unnecessary, but i do it anyway. Applebees doesn’t put ketchup or mustard in the fridge, but i do. Ive got plenty of space in my fridge for such a venture.

Cholula is my go-to “I guarantee this grocery store carries it” hot sauce but I’ve got a bunch of fun niche and local stuff too

  75. JudgeGusBus Avatar

Turns out I agree with you, but I couldn’t tell that from that godawful headline you started with. “Tabasco is not good” would’ve gotten my upvote.

  76. waner21 Avatar

Oh, OP. You need to try Tabasco’s Habanero version. It’s nothing like their flagship sauce. I hate, absolutely hate Tabasco (original and vinegary), but their Habanero version is incredibly good. It hits the sweet spot of having heat and amazing flavor. Give it a shot. I think you’ll be surprised.

  77. Icecubemelter Avatar

If you’re a picky eater just say that

  78. dark_holes Avatar

On the IQ bell curve enjoying Tabasco places you at either the highest or lowest ends. Having two fridge shelves full of hot sauces places you right in the middle.

  79. Erebus1147 Avatar

I think you are confusing Tasbasco with Frank’s Hot Sauce, which is f#*king terrible. Tasbasco is mana from heaven compared to that pigs’ swill…

I make my own hot sauce (my own recipe, very hot but you can taste the herbs and spices that are in it). Highly recommend doing this!!

  80. Environmental-Age502 Avatar

    Me reading this.

“Tabasco is hands down the undisputed champion” (downvotes) “of the absolute worst(upvotes) “commercially popular hot sauces available.”

  81. MyKingdomForADram Avatar

You just described it as “hot vinegar” as though that’s a bad thing. Hot vinegar and oily foods are amazing together. Tabasco on fried eggs? Fucking great.

Your take is trash, Tabasco is not the best but it for sure has its place – upvote.

  82. ChibiHedorah Avatar

Have you ever asked at a restaurant if they have hot sauce, and the waiter goes “we have Tabasco. Is that ok?” In an apologetic tone. This has happened to me so many times I think it should be the company’s slogan. Roll commercial: “Tabasco. Is this ok?”

  83. Toobefaaaaaiirrr Avatar

I’m a hot sauce whore and enjoy all the sauces. I find that the acidity of the vinegar makes Tabasco a great hot sauce for bean and stews

  84. razorwiregoatlick877 Avatar

But hot vinegar is what I’m looking for when I use Tabasco

  85. SpinachSalad91 Avatar

You got it…my upvote for being wrong.

  86. uberchink Avatar

I LOVE tobasco on pizza, spaghetti + meatballs, and various egg dishes. Makes them 10x better to me.

I love different kinds of hot sauces for different things.

  87. NotHearingYourShit Avatar

I used to feel this. I was wrong. It’s not an all purpose sauce. It’s very good for specific things. It brightens foods. It’s good on a chicken sandwich or a dash on oysters etc. Think of it like a spicy vinaigrette without the oil – not a hot sauce.

  88. sharkdinowolf Avatar

    Sriracha enters the chat.

  89. archeezee Avatar

The fact that it’s just hot vinegar is why it’s so popular. Many dishes can benefit from a splash of acidity and heat. And that’s all Tabasco does. Without significantly changing a flavor profile. It’s probably the most versatile hot sauce ever due to its simplicity. Thus, the well deserved popularity. If you’re looking for a unique, interesting, and stand out flavor to add to your dish, it’s not the choice. But for any dish that could use acidity and heat, it will always be a good option 😁

  90. RacktheMan Avatar

I think Tabasco has a crap aftertaste. I don’t find this opinion unpopular.

  91. Gr00vealicious Avatar

Not unpopular. Tabasco is trash, on par with cilantro.

  92. BigDaddyChaCha Avatar

Tabasco has its uses , and I’d rather have it than nothing, to be sure, but it’s not really spicy, and, yeah, it is mostly vinegar.

French fries, popcorn, pasta; I put it on lots of stuff though, mostly because I’m in a country that does not have a great variety of other hot sauces.

  93. DirtbagSocialist Avatar

Frank’s Red Hot is worse by an order of magnitude.
