Text messages should be for small stuff like:
“I’m at the store. Do you need anything?”
“Can you buy xyz?”
Or
“I’m at [place]. Where are you?”
“I’m on the way.”
Or
“[Person]’s birthday is next week, but I don’t know what to offer him. Do you have any ideas?”
“[Person] likes [thing]. Maybe a [gift idea]?”
Or
“Hi [boss], I will be late because of [reason].”
“Understood, thanks for telling me.”
If you need to have a whole conversation, about important stuff, especially with your partner, just call the other person.

It will be faster than typing.
-
Your voice will convey cues that text couldn’t, which is to your benefit, especially if it’s an emotional matter.
-
And honestly, you shouldn’t be scared of phone calls.

There’s merit in holding longer conversations and being able to see a record. Good post.
👍
I’m not scared of calls. I just don’t prefer them. I call people plenty. Sometimes I’m overstimulated would rather text. It’s about ease not about fear.
You’re showing your age.
False, calls should be small stuff, I don’t want to have a 45 minute conversation with Grams that has absolutely nothing to do with the call in the first place
Wait til OP finds out people used to write letters
No interest in them being quick. I’d rather it be in depth and points properly laid out instead of on the fly while talking.
Also there are times where neither of you can do a phone call which benefits texting
No
Ill be scared of whatever the fuck I want, you aint my therapist.
Texting is good for casual convo that stretches over the course of a day. You can talk while doing other things. If I call someone they’re going to assume there’s something very specific I want to discuss
Text a bit before calling? If I’m busy working, I’m not going to pickup. If I get a long text, I can craft a reply when I have time.
Fair opinion though
Good luck getting a word in with Grams to get her back to topic, you are a patient person my friend, I’ve literally told my Mom 15 times I had to go before she told a story from last week I already heard, AGAIN, now hanging up would be rude, but I’ve thought about it, forget awkward silence, ghosting, you can’t GET away
no. texting is way more accurate and much, much, easier to hold an actual conversation in.
Alternatively: stop fuckin calling me to invite me out to something. Just text “tryna eat at [restaurant] tmrw? I’m tryna see who wants to go”.
I don’t need a 1 minute call ffs
I used to have the longest calls with my grandma talking about everything under the sun, I miss her so much. They were meaningful and I’m glad I was able to call often. Realistically though calls just aren’t always compatible with what’s going on in life. I have a 1.5yr old and a newborn soon, nobody wants to talk to me over needy screaming kids and/or I’m nap trapped and I can only text lol.
Mine have became so short it’s something like:
“Doin”
“Nothin”
“Hang”
“Be halfa”
you’re right, this is a pretty unpopular opinion. haha
No. My first option always is to text, I hate talking on the phone. In text, i can take my time to process and respond to the info, while during a call I have to formulate a response faster, which I hate.
My problem is that I mostly process information in images, not in words. I can visualize everything in great detail and that is the way I actually understand the information, words without images are empty for me, so when I’m holding a conversation i have to “translate” the words into images, generate a response in images and “translate” it back into words. As you can imagine, this takes longer than for someone who processes and thinks directly into words. For this reason, text messages are a breath of fresh air for me. I’m already exhausted all day from having to force myself to process everything faster at work and at uni, if on top of that i have to hold a conversation over the phone instead of just texting, i’m losing my marbles.
I also have a great visual memory, while auditory memory isn’t that great. I’m most likely to remember the convo over text than over a call, I can better remember the text block rather than what you said to me over a call.
It can become tedious to read long texts just like it can be quite tedious to read long Reddit communications
Honestly I’m the opposite. All conversations should be text, I DND all calls 24 hours a day to prevent calls in fact.
Typing can be faster due to greater conciseness. We have tone tags.
But yes I understand your point.
No. Don’t call.
