A lot of people act like everyone has a completely objective number that can be attached to them which is constant and agreed upon by everyone. That number is supposed to signify how attractive that person is.
If that’s the case, I’m a 6. Unless I dress up, then I’m an 8. But wait, someone isn’t attracted to the style I chose to dress in so now I’m a 2. Maybe there’s someone who really likes me and is super attracted to me, to them I’m a 10. Or they don’t, and I’m a 0. Some days I just don’t bother, so I’m a 4. But actually I get hit on more on those days, so maybe I’m back at 6?
Are there societal standards of beauty? Definitely, and they do influence things, but even those can vary a lot based on culture, area ect… And they are definitely not set in stone. Bodies go in and out of style as much as clothes do and what’s the height of attraction now probably won’t be in five years. Also people don’t look the same day to day–you bloat and then you don’t, breakouts come and go, sometimes you feel like making and effort and sometimes you don’t ect… All of those things can effect how conventionally attractive you are.
Not to mention, we’re not just clones who all find the same things attractive. Individual preferences can vary wildly from person to person. Henry Cavill may be western societies 10 but if you’re only attracted to skinny emo men he could be your 4. To my grandfather, the most beautiful woman in the world is an overweight elderly woman (and trust me, I’m not just saying that. My grandparents put rabbits to shame, which I know because they have none).
I’m not saying that there aren’t people who are widely considered attractive or unattractive but I am saying that attraction in general is far more complicated than a 1-10 scale will ever manage to capture and I think that acting like it’s static and final is a having an overall negative effect on how we interact with the world.

The scale is a personal thing. It was never meant to be “you’re a 7, and everyone agrees, it’s just a fact”.
It’s an opinion based off of personal tastes. It also changes all the time, because people do, and it’s also not even that serious.

Not really sure if this is an unpopular opinion, the scale is different for each person as not everyone is the same.
People try to set up a certain standard of proportions that, while do have some basis in truth (we are attracted to symmetrical features) are also silly. If there is an exactly perfect face, then by definition any face that looks at all different is imperfect. So either we’re all clones or we are all imperfect.
While there can be some objective standards of beauty, our perceptions and attractions are largely subjective.
The part that bugs me most about it, is that its an attempt to make a subjective measure more objective but then kinda sucks at that.
Also the 10s and 1s are too inaccessible. The scale would be decile based ideally, where the 1s are less attractive than 90% of the sample and the 10s are more attractive than 90%. Instead 10s are like unicorns.
Of course the number is subjective for everyone, it’s the average across enough people that gives you a more accurate reflection of how people see you.
I like 1-3 scale. You are either beautiful, average, or no beautiful. Everything in between is stupid. And the number are based on personal preference.

The stupid part is that people say average-looking people are a 7 because they don’t want to say anyone is a 1-3. If we’re going to use the scale to objectify people, it should at least follow normal distribution 🤷♂️
