I watched a documentary about how McDonald’s contracts with a company that catches Alaska Pollack in the ice cold waters off the coast of Alaska and then immediately processes and flash freezes them in a state-of-the-art facility on the ship. Every single piece of fish they serve is a filet of the highest quality and freshness.
Every piece is fried to perfection, there’s a half slice of cheese which is just the right amount, and McDonald’s tartar sauce, the recipe which some food scientist formulated that is out of this world delicious.
I’ve had every sandwich on their menu, I’ve eaten McDonald’s around the world, and not a single other sandwich they offer, anywhere in the world, holds a candle to the Filet-O-Fish.

Flaky, warm soft bun. Tartar sauce for the win!
I’m upvoting, not because it’s a bad sandwich but because I like the spicy mcchicken with cheese and. Spicy pepper sauce more
ok I don’t know about highest quality and freshness, but this is correct. The meat in the hamburgers tastes kinda bad to me.
If I remember correctly we steam the bun. There was a special way we warm up the bun for the fish sandwich. It been 10 Years or so since I work there so I can’t recall all the details. Shockingly, most of the McDonald food is real food. Real beef, real fish, real egg, and real chicken despite all the crazy rumor lol
Thank god the FoF won out over the pineapple burger monstrosity when McD’s market tested them.
Agreed, but I’m not sold on the Double Fillet-O-Fish. The fish to tartare sauce ratio isn’t quite right.
You’re not wrong.
I’m just not willing to say a well made Big Mac isn’t at least equal
From the regular menu? Yes. But if we’re factoring-in breakfast, then I’d say the steak, egg & cheese bagel.
McChicken or the spicy one. Thank me later
100%
Fish and cheese is just not a combination I want.
Finally another Filet O Fish truther. I go for the double with extra sauce. Plus the bonus is almost no one orders the filet o fish at my McDonald’s so it’s almost always fresh out the fryer
For me, it’s the McChicken. The best fast food sandwich. I even ask for extra McChicken sauce packets and the staff is so friendly and more than willing to oblige.
How do you like the filet o fish better than a double quarter pounder?
Get this with extra cheese (kind of weird because when you ask for extra it’s a whole slice ) and extra tarter.
I do like the FoF but it has gotten so small!
I guess I’ll be heading over for a filet of fish now…
But seriously, McDs tartar sauce is the greatest fry sauce on earth
Whoooaaa, let’s slow down here. I appreciate how they are caught and arguably (depending on the restaurant in question) how they’re cooked may indicate highest of quality, but a lot happens in between those steps.
The transport and shipping process alone is bananas. Then to ship wild (misnomer, no such thing really anymore) Alaskan Pollack? From Alaska? To, let’s say, Texas? Albuquerque? Miami?
Not an unpopular opinion. The fish filet sandwich is damn good.
The bun.
My favourite Scottish restaurant ever!
Culvers fish sandwich is better
Yeah I guess so but like compared to what? Their mystery meat?
Add pickles and slivered onions…..DEVINE!
The Arby’s fish sandwich is pretty great, but it’s seasonal and not available all year round. The McDonald’s File ‘o Fish is by far the best full-availability fish sandwich among national fast food restaurants.
The sandwich used to be a lot bigger. Now it’s small.
One more thing about their fish sandwich. Ive tried many a fast food fish sandwich, and even the fancier more expensive competition does not beat the filet o fish. Ive not had a better fish sandwich yet.
It’s not so much unpopular but people actively avoid it.
Nothing wrong with it, you can buy effectively the same fish patties in a grocery store. It hits it’s just expensive.
Upvote because it’s not the “best” which is the Big Mac and I stand by it. If only it was priced better for what it’s worth (it’s just a double cheese with a middle bun and the sauce isn’t worth the difference)
Nope, no upvote from me; I agree.
This is unpopular?? Everyone I know only eats the FoF. Unless it’s McRib season
Hot and spicy no mayo
It’s actually the spicy crispy chicken sandwich with the spicy sauce imo
I like it too. But it’s been getting smaller for years. And the cheese is just bad.
Yes. Thank you. Someone finally said it.
i second this opinion and consider it unpopular because mcdonald’s own data shows that this is the least popular meat on their menu
I tried my first a few months ago. It was decent, a little flabby but certainly fill that fried fish craving
I think I might upvote like 1% of this sub. It’s like I just agree with all of it. Including this one.
Dunno if the sub is broken, or if I’m just an asshole full of unpopular opinions.
The best sandwich is a Jr. Chicken, +1 patty with extra sauce… Combined with a double cheeseburger. You take one slice of bread away from each and then put them together.
It’s called a mini sky & turf.
honestly… big agree, my goto is 10pc and the filet o fish, they used to be on this value meal thing were you get both for like 5 or 6 bucks and it was nice
Yeah they are underrated. Every now and then I pick one up when I don’t feel like a fatty meat patty. They have to be fresh though. If you leave them in the bag for too long they get a bit “fishy”.
Yeah, the best McDonalds sandwich is the McArabia. Hands down. Never had a Big Tasty, though.
It’s ok. Problem with them is I feel like I could about a half dozen and still be hungry.
💯
My God! I love Filet O’Fish! I introduced my step-son to it while on vacation in Belgium and now he loves it too. There’s something about the soft bun and the cheese that makes it so perfect.
Back when I was drinking and smoking I ordered a McRib and Filet O’Fish and made a McRibO’Fish monstrosity. It was tastier than I expected. But I never tried it sober so take my recommendation with grain of salt.
Shit, I had one today for lunch. I love a hot fOf
Extra tartar sauce
Visited Ketchikan AK and the fisherman there mentioned this. They were quite proud of their role in Filet of Fishes and said McDonald’s paid well and invested in the community
The best. Not unpopular
I agree with everything except “there’s a half slice of cheese which is just the right amount”. You have touched on my McDonalds pet peeve….
The Filet-o-Fish comes with a half slice of cheese. If you ask for a whole slice of cheese, they will charge you for a whole slice of cheese and they will give you (almost always) exactly one slice of cheese but, they don’t give you the other half slice that is already supposed to come on the sandwich! If I pay the price for a whole slice of cheese, I want my other half slice thats supposed to come on the sandwich dammit!
Preach!
Downvoted because I agree. It is my favourite item
Tartar sauce is gross.
I love the filet, wish the actual fish was just a touch bigger. Sometimes I go for the double just cause I love the Pollock filet part so much. Easily the best sandwich on the menu.
the burger king fish filet sandwich is superior to the mcdonald’s fish filet sandwich. cheese in one is an affront to god.
I like 1 every 10 years!
When I worked overnights I’d crave a filet o fish meal after my shift. Even now sometimes I’d wake up around 4-6am and consider driving to McDonald’s for that abomination of a square that satisfies my innate desire.
That’s saying something too because fast food fish is usually such shit its not worth attempted to get it.
I dont care if it was freshly caught and flash frozen. The teenager working in McDs is expected to follow the directions to perfection? Not a chance.
Whoa had no idea
Spitting facts
Nice one. I get it all the time even though it seems pretty overpriced these days so McDonalds is pretty rare for us to get. Extra sauce, or double wet as I disgustingly call it.
Idk how prevalent it is these days on elementary school playground but kids would use to spread rumors that it was made with squirrel meat(?). It was still my favourite sandwich as a kid growing up and still now
You must have never been to Texas. The Texas Homestyle burger with the signature Homestyle sauce is an 11/10 and THE BEST BURGER AT MCDONALDS HANDS DOWN!
I haven’t thought about this in years, I do not like fish so will not weigh in on how good the sandwich is, but over a decade ago when I worked there we had a customer who came in twice a day, every day and got the same thing, a Fillet-O-Fish, plain, made fresh. His name was Charlie, he was a wonderful old man, I was with him when I learned the news that Robin Williams died, unlike some of our other regular customers we actually liked seeing him, when I learned we were closed Christmas Day I actually asked “Who is going to feed Charlie? When someone would see Charlie walking down the road his arrival was announced so everyone knew to start prepping his meal.
Charlie was an older gentleman so I sadly doubt he is still with us but I really hope he is.
Yes, the Filet o fish is elite
Hell yeah it is
Sandwich?
It’s my second favorite but the best burger/sandwich is easily the Double Quarter Pounder. Almost as good as a charcoal grilled 100% angus frozen patty you bought at Walmart, but it’s got cheddar cheese inside it too.
My wife gets those but now that I think about it I’ve never had before. 🤯 y’all really selling it tho lemme tell you. Bout to order one tomorrow.
Yup always thought this too
No, it’s the Mckroket. That is pure perfection. You can’t convince me otherwise
All of McDonald’s pales in comparison to almost any other fast food chain imo.
>Every piece is fried to perfection, there’s a half slice of cheese which is just the right amount, and McDonald’s tartar sauce, the recipe which some food scientist formulated that is out of this world delicious.
it’s not a filet, it’s a square piece of pressed fish. every filet o fish sandwich i’ve ever had was soggy and oil soaked because the jackholes that work there can’t be bothered to heat up the oil properly. sure the tartar sauce is great but they’re too stingy with it. and cheese does not belong on fish.
so you have a theory of a fish sandwich that does not exist in reality.
Yup. It’s my favorite from McDonald’s too.
I can’t have them anymore, but the BK big fish is 10x better than McDs if you add cheese.
Word. On the extremely rare occasion I still at a McD it’s a fleet o fish and a McChicken
In Germany, it was called FishMac in my childhood before they adapted it to Filet-o-Fish 😋
The double filet o fish is amazing.
Fantastic and underrated sandwich.
I like it, but always forget about it.
Found Michael Scott.
The sauce is really good I like it
absolutely AGREEEEED
I guess you’ve never had a Chicken Legend
“Every single piece of fish they serve is a filet of the highest quality and freshness.”
Sir, you said McDonald’s. Their focus is never on quality. And why have you eaten McDonald’s around the world? It’s hard to find worse food so it would make more sense to just try random spots.
I get the impression your taste buds don’t work.
100% agree! Now if they can make it without half the bloody fillet hanging out the side I’d die a happy fillet o fish loving man
Love a FoF chaser
Double filet o fish so good in japan
This happened to me last time I saw a post about filet o fish but at that time I had never tried it and I went, huh maybe I should try… so I did and I was like very confused about what all the fuss was about. It had like no flavour. Is this a mcdonalds marketing ploy or what?
If I’m at McDonald’s, “best” is not something that I apparently care about.
I legitimately would rather eat every single menu item over the fish fillet. Take my upvote
Only sandwich I eat at McDonalds but have found the fish patties have got smaller over the years.
No mention of the bun. 6/10 review
I try to make a copy cat of it using Walmart products but when you said the tarter sauce recipe is different, no wonder my sandwich doesn’t taste the same as McDonald’s
Double fish filet is about the same price as the single l.
Yes. I love filet o fish, and it’s definitely unpopular for some reason.
Nah it’s the steak McGriddle (or bagel if you don’t want a sweet element).
Half a slice?
Good unpopular opinion. Fuck a FoF
What the fuck is a maccas sandwich
I don’t like fish, so I can’t offer an opinion. I’ll say this is not the first time I’ve heard this. It may not be that unpopular.
Everyone sleeps on it, it’s fucking magic.
