[the boys] so are some animals actually sapient and have human intelligence?

r/

The octopus the deep was sleeping with could talk and have conversation with the him, although only he could understand it because of his powers.

Does this imply that some animals are sapient?

Octopuses are actually surprisingly intelligent, but I think a lot of it is the Deep reading the creature’s body language and imagining what he wants it to say

Animals with large enough brains humans already think are intelligent are the only animals we actually see deep communicate,

Yes. It may be that how intelligent the animal is matters in terms of the level of communication. Like dolphins and Octopus.

We know deep’s definitely not just crazy and is actually talking to them as he gets info on the plane crash and translucent’s body from animals.

I’m pretty sure octopuses are sapient in real life. They’re capable of learning novel skills, creating tools and solving complex puzzles. That’s not human level intelligence, but I’d argue it counts as sapient.

I can buy that, if you were able to magically handwave over the physical inability, you could hold a conversation with one..

Honestly, I was running on the theory that The Deep is just nuts and hearing voices.

Maybe part of his power is sharing part of his brainpower to whatever animal he’s interacting with. Makes sense why he’s so dumb: he’s actually a genius, and just has to share the majority of it.

He’s adapted to it too, so even when he isn’t talking to an animal, he has no access to the excess brainpower.

Almost every “talk to animals” power really calls into question just WTF is going on with animal intelligence. In The Boys it seems to just reveal that lots of animals are some kind of equivalent of intelligent, and we normally just can’t understand them. This has… lots of implications for the people who live there, which are generally ignored. I mean, The Deep cares, but nobody else seems to react to the knowledge that octopi can carry on a conversation, even if it is only with The Deep.

I remember one comic book where a dedicated vegan gains the ability to talk to plants, and decides she won’t eat anything since if plants can talk, it’s immoral to eat them too.

IRL there’s pretty good evidence that we are not so special in regards to self awareness and decision making.

I’ve only ever watched the show rather than read the comics, but I always got the feeling that the Deep’s conversations with the octopus were one-sided. As in I think it’s entirely possible that he imagined their answers.

So while I can’t say for sure either way, I think there’s a solid chance that the Deep isn’t actually communicating with sapient creatures.

Which makes what he does with them all the more horrible.
