The idea that “anybody could fall into a cult” is insulting and wrong

You hear this from former cult members, and cult experts all the time.

I’m not victim blaming here, but it’s just not true.

In fact, it’s probably the opposite. Very few people could fall into a cult…that’s why they’re cults – small, peripheral, plainly dangerous groups that 99.9% of society instinctively mocks and avoids.

I know it’s popular to express sympathy (which I have) but don’t expect me to agree that cults are so powerful and compelling that everyone is susceptible. Almost nobody is.
