The One Piece art style is just plain ugly…to me.

r/

I know this is one of the longest-running anime ever. It’s part of the legendary Big 3. People grew up loving it, and I respect that. But I honestly can’t get through a single episode not because of the story, but because the art style is just unpleasant to look at.

Everything from the character designs to the world itself just looks weird and off to me. I get that it’s supposed to be cartoony and unique, but to me, it crosses into downright ugly.

One Piece started in 1999, and if you compare it to what else was coming out at the time, the difference is wild. You had Cowboy Bebop showing off this gritty, mature, beautifully animated world. Goku was going Super Saiyan in Dragon Ball Z with bold, sharp designs. Even Pokémon, with its electric rats and water turtles, looked crisp and vibrant. But then there’s One Piece… and it just looks like it came from a different (and much weirder) dimension.

I get that people love the story, and maybe it grows on you, but I just can’t do it.

Have you seen it in the last couple years? Looks completely different

Is that so? Would you consider this man weird and ugly?!

    You don’t understand real beauty.

I assume you haven’t watched it the last few years. The more Japanese waterbrushed style of the Wano arc was pretty cool and the Egghead arc has some really sharp animation

    Not an unpopular opinion

Oh man you really stopped at the very early stages, since the style changes as the years go by

    It’s a fair point.

A lot of Oda’s character designs are grotesque on purpose, but that doesn’t mean they’re beyond criticism. The art style is definitely an acquired taste, and that’s kind of important for a visual medium.

Fully agree. It’s a big reason why I can’t watch it. My husband loves it and would love for me to get into it, but he understands that I can’t watch ugly anime. Even if the story is good (which it certainly seems to be). The ugliest I’ve been able to watch and enjoy was Kaiji
