The Passion of the Christ (2004) is a MEH film

r/

My best friend suggested I watch this because I love history and learning about different cultures. She said she cried, I find myself honestly bored. I have 20 minutes to go and can’t help but think “omg how much longer?”

It has been two hours of torture. I was expecting we the audience were going to have a build up to Jesus’s crucifixion and we were getting a complete story. I would probably enjoy this film more if it were in two parts, the first be the character building such as his teachings and how he touched those in his community and this be a part two.

Instead, I am left feeling bored, I have only learned how horrible people are, and dissatisfied.

Idk can you guys share your thoughts with me? I want to get my thoughts in order before I discuss this with my bestie because she loved it.

I mean one google search could have saved you more than Jesus tbh

Lol the film wasn’t intended to be viewed as a “lead up” to the crucifixion. Its audience is one of the largest groups in the world, they probably already know the lead up.

Also, you’re mixing discussing the film as an art, vs “what the plot of Jesus’ life” was.

It’s called The Passion of the Christ. Kinda explaining it’s going to be right before and during his crucifixion.

The only people who were moved by the film were those who were pre-disposed to be moved by the story of Christ.

I remember my sister, a friend of hers, and I trying to watching it one night back in 2005. (Granted, none of us are super religious) but we turned it off around the actual crucifying more out of boredom than anything else. You can only stand to watch a guy get beaten and tortured for like 2 hours before it just gets ridiculous and repetitive.

This is NOT an unpopular opinion. Downvoted.

Like a lot of movies where the audience is PRE-INVESTED, it has a certain specialness that simply doesn’t register for everyone else.

Same thing for Harry Potter. The first movie was a complete stinker. Bad acting, flimsy story, bad direction, even bad special effects. BUT it was a huge hit because jillions of people loved the books and couldn’t wait to see it come to life on the screen.

I don’t know how unpopular this is. It’s a torture porn snuff film that’s dripping with antisemitism, made by a raging antisemite.

Is your friend a Christian? That will influence her view of the film.

Christians have a tendency to hype anything Christian that hits the mainstream without critical analysis. There’s also an insular Christian entertainment industry that mostly produces garbage (outside of the mid-90s, which had great Christian rock in a variety of subgenres but, to the surprise of no one, young Christian punk rockers ended up questioning their faith and many left), so the film probably does seem amazing to someone who grew up only allowed to watch Kevin Sorbo films.

They’re not the only group that does this. I bought a few social justice children’s books and they were trash. Comic books have been much better at facilitating these discussions with my child without being preachy and poorly written.

Broski this is 100% the popular opinion, at least on Reddit.

It was like DaVinci code all hype over religion and then the movies were sub-par

It’s not meant to be a “story.” There’s so character development or progression. Jesus doesn’t learn anything, the “bad guys” aren’t shown as defeated (except the artistic inclusion of the Devil, sort of).

It’s history goes back to Passion Plays.

So yeah, it’s a “meh” film, but it is not intending to be a classic “film.” It doesn’t have a plot, developedment, any of what you expect in a story. It’s purpose is just to artistically represent the unlawful trial and crucifixion of Jesus. If that doesn’t already mean something to you, the movie won’t mean anything.

I remember thinking: “well, what was the fucking point of that?”.

I’m not a christian so I don’t really get the point of why his suffering somehow makes me in debt to him.

Didn’t finish it. Mom wanted to go because shes the only serious catholic in the family and when she started working sundays we stopped going to church. Touchy atmosphere because this whole things literally a guilt trip. Mom is getting more upset because the evangelicals wont stop crying and flailing their arms, dad gets upset enough to bellow out ” SIT DOWN YOU FUCKING FREAKS” Mom to noone in particular say “he meant, you kneel down before god. He doesnt take the save. The usher ushers us out but not before my dad walks all the way up to the front row points out a singular man and yells ” THIS MAN WAS WAILING, LIKE A GIRL” We went to cold stone after and he tops the evening off with a nice ” cmon you already know the plot whats the big deal”. Yes they are divorced.
