Location: San Francisco, California. While I was out of my house, the person who I was dating showed up to my house uninvited. My housemates let them in because I have had this person over several times. So, even uninvited it wasn’t necessarily strange to my housemates. Then the person went into my bedroom and broke my laptop in half. I was texted by them saying that they broke it and even got a photo sent by them of the damage. I returned home and assertively asked them to leave, and I did not touch them physically.
I’m probably going to file a police report. What should I expect and how should I prepare? What other things should I consider?

You can file a police report but they are not going to do anything.
If anything you can sue them in small claims court for the depreciated value of the laptop

You just call up the non-emergency line and ask to file a report. Tell the officer everything that happened.

If law enforcement decides not to get involved, you can consider suing this person in small claims court for the value of whatever kind of used laptop.
There’s not really much to expect here. They committed a crime. You tell the police the facts as you know it. Show them everything you have. Don’t be surprised if they don’t decide to pursue this. It’s super low priority. But you may need that police report to file on your renter’s insurance.
