Say you got a thing of popsicles in the freezer, and there’s two left. If you’re gonna eat one, it’s your job to throw the box away. You then leave the last one in the freezer, in a place where it’s easily spotted. That way, everyone knows that there’s only one popsicle left, and you need to get more. Same rule should apply to soda, beer, energy bars. Basically anything that comes in a box, but is also individually wrapped.

This seems reasonable to me
If someone in my house threw away boxes of things with 1 left, I would see the box and get more and then we would end up over time just getting a pile of individual items hidden away
Why arbitrarily the second to last and not just the last? With your logic, why not the third to the last or fourth to the last?
Do this for eggs.
Nah, you should keep the box available until the last item is eaten. Many people want to be able to check the ingredients list and/or the nutrition facts, which are usually only printed on the box, not the individually wrapped products.
Plus, it’s easier to tell what the item is when it’s in its clearly labeled box. For example, an ice cream bar in the freezer in a generic white wrapper.
And also the box typically has the cooking/heating instructions.
I didn’t think this was unpopular. This is how I do things (and I live alone). There’s no need for a box in the freezer/pantry wherever with only 1 item left in it.

everyone knows the responsibility falls on the one who takes the last one.
you sound like you’re always the last one and you always have to throw the box and you’re trying to dump your responsibility on someone else
Small, loose items are definitely getting lost and forgotten in my freezer. Besides, if I want to remember to pick up more of something I’ll just add it to the grocery list.
Only exception is if I need the space for something.
Depends on the item. Just toss the box for many items after opening. Some items need the box until they’re gone
This is unpopular but so genius??
100%, and if there is another box, you get it and put the last one in the new box.
People that don’t throw the box away when there’s one left and people that get upset when there’s a box with only one left are the same people: they think throwing a box away is a huge deal.
2nd to last means there are 3 left. Next to last means there are 2 left…
I agree. There should not be a box that once contained 32 garlic bread slices and it now only contains one. The box should have been discarded with the last loaf was left.
I don’t agree with your idea of throwing the box away only because my freezer is generally packed, so nobody would seek out the last popsicle. We’d all assume the box is gone, so the popsicles are done.
However, my brother has a tendency to leave the empty box in the freezer, and no amount of explanations that it’s annoying that he won’t do the due diligence of tossing the box ever gets to him.
From popsicles to Texas Toast to chicken nuggets, this dude never learns. And he’s 34 yrs old. He’s stuck in his ways.
Just throw the box away when you open it imo.
Like, maybe I could see keeping the box until halfway if it was food you needed to know the time to microwave it for. But popsicles? That box is just taking up space.
I’d like to be your roommate. A person who thinks in systems can share rent anytime.
Just throw the box away before you put it in the freezer… That way you’re never taking up more space than you need to.

Have you seen inside the freezer of a busy household? Whole pizzas get lost, never mind one measly popsicle. We can barely find the breadcrumbs behind all the other stuff, even those have their own specific spot.
Also, popsicles suck. Except for otterpops, and those are best exactly 1/3 thawed.
Omggggg this is my opinion!
I totally agree with this. If there are 2 they should stay together so it makes sense to keep the box but if there is only 1 left the box is just taking up space. Plus like you said that way you know there is only 1 left, more often than not there are 2 people in the house and things come in odd numbers on purpose because of this.
Pretty sure all women know this. Don’t act like it’s not true.
Idk why people are trying to find such an issue with this. Its a smart system, I probably won’t do it but its smart

What’s worse than this is if there’s like food or milk that’s just enough for one person but the last person that got some leaves an insignificant amount left in the container. Like wtf. Consume the rest!
Nope, no silly rules in my house. We had rules, just not silly ones.
I don’t want lose single items in the freezer / fridge. Perhaps if there was a box dedicated to single items. (Though I expect there to be a danger of a box of old expired items with this practice.)
i usually take the last one and purposely leave the box to piss my family off
