The “price of convenience” has gotten too expensive.

r/

I get we pay more for things because they’re convenient. Whether gas station prices of goods or delivery or vending machines. Or Air bnb. Or online video rental.

I know inflation has played a factor too. But overall, I’m saying the price of convenience is too much now.

Vending machine sodas are way more. Delivery fees. Online video rentals are sometimes more than the movie ticket to go watch it. Online ticket fees vs box office purchases. Tiered parking to park closer at events or parks.

The price of convenience doesn’t seem it’s worth the return as much.

You and everyone else just got too poor. By design.

Have you tried being born wealthy, or marrying a senator?

fast food used to be because it was cheap inconvenient, now it’s just convenient…

A fast food hamburger meal cost as much as a dine in hamburger restaurant now

I agree with you completely absolutely and I agree with your perspective

A lot of these things were artificially underpriced previously. Venture capital was posting half of your bill so you’d download their app and they would choke out competitors. Now that they have market capture, there’s no motivation for them to subsidize the cost.

The cost of convenience goes way beyond the price tag. Those convenient services like Amazon and Walmart have destroyed our communities. They add pollution to our air and water. They use up our resources and destroy our natural areas. They contribute nothing to our communities and add to our landfills in the form extra packaging and garbage that breaks too soon.

I am happy to by my food from local farmers, and buy my goods from locally owned businesses. I may pay a bit more in money, but I get so much more back in quality of life.

Online video rental is pretty cheap. I can rent a digital movie for $5 which isn’t really different than when I’d pay $3 back in the 90’s to rent a VHS from blockbuster

People have gotten lazier in a lot of ways so they rely on conveniences. As a result, suppliers of convenience know they can charge you more and you’ll pay it. Just look at the absurd amount of money people waste on uber eats (and similar) because they’re too lazy to cook. Most of those people aren’t in need of the convenience. They just don’t want to put in the effort.

And no, making a quick meal at home isn’t a huge effort. You could literally make a sandwich or quick pasta with sauce in a few minutes. People say “I’m too tired after work to spend an hour cooking and doing dishes” but there’s a billion quick and cheap meals you can make. A salad and a homemade wrap takes under 5 minutes to make and maybe 2 minutes to hand wash everything and would cost a lot less than uber eats.

People have gotten lazy and just blame it on “being tired”. Being a responsible adult hasn’t gotten any more exhausting in the last 50 years. It’s just become a lot more acceptable to wallow in the exhaustion of life. Not enough energy to put together a quick homemade meal but lots of energy to doomscroll Reddit or Instagram for hours instead lol

They want to nickle and dime you to death I refuse to pay for a video rental if I can easily find the torrent and through it on the plex server.

Convenience has always been expensive. It is actually one of the few things where the price of something will actually be what the market will bear.

Or did you just grow up and now you can’t spend all your money on eating out?

Because it is no longer being subsidized by venture capital. It never was viable to have a burrito taxi, but now we are paying it’s real cost. Or well, nearly.

Safeway sells 6 packs of French bread for about $1.00 a piece. Meanwhile a whole fucking loaf of the same bread is $2.99.

Time is money, so they say.

Whenever you are considering paying for convenience, just compare the price to how much time you saved to how much you make an hour.

So for an extreme example, an ER doctor can make like 300 or 400 dollars an hour. Doing his/her own yardwork might take maybe an hour or two a week? A landscaper might charge $100 a month?

Do the math. The doc could work a single shift and pay for all their landscaping for a few years. Now if the person enjoys a particular task, thats completely different. Or if they just want to learn how to do a particular task.

Otherwise, time is money. The less money you make per hour, the more you should be avoiding paying for convenience. If you make tons of money, pay for that shit and pick up some overtime.
