Like even in the flashbacks when the twin sisters were kids (like the Episode ”The way we was.” the one with Marge dad in fact the sisters got their smoking habits from their dad.) they always seem to be unhappy and the only times they seem to be happy is when they playing in the pool with Marge in their Aunt Gladys who based on the flashback seems to be happy too.
I always wonder why outside of Marge and to an extent their Aunt Gladys Gurney and maybe Marge’s dad all the bouviers seem to be unhappy/stoic or depressed even during the flashbacks episodes?

The flashback isn’t a real memory, Marge is misremembering a movie.
Marge’s mother is a bitter old lady, but she was content, remember that her mother taught her the “smile so that others smile to you, hide your suffering” that Marge tried to instill into Lisa.
That can’t be mentally healthy.
Marge loves the chaos Homer brings into her life, even if she hates the consequences, he makes her feel alive.
The sisters are not exactly unhappy, they have their interests and things that make them happy, it’s just that you often see them with Homer and they hate him with a passion.
We see several episodes where they are happy, when sideshow bob marries Zelma, when Patty hours with Skinner, when they torture Homer, when watching McGiver…
They have their own lives, The Simpsons is Bart’s story, of course his two single aunts are going to look boring and sad from his point of view.
