The smell of freshly cut grass is awful.

r/

After cutting my grass, I overheard my neighbour talk about how good the freshly cut grass smells.

I’ve known many people who talk about the smell of freshly cut grass like it’s some “beautiful” summer fragrance. Comparing it to freshly baked bread even. Like wtf?

To me, it stinks and it reminds me of hot weather, headaches, and loud machinery.

I think most people like it, but it’s awful.

You’re empathic. The grass is screaming.

So it’s actually a smell the grass puts off to scare away creatures who eat grass.  It’s supposed to smell bad. It’s a defense mechanism. Just like the smell of ripe fruit.

For some reasons humans evolved to love it. But that’s the opposite of what the grass intends.

Well, most humans evolved to love it, it seems !

    Maybe it’s phosgene

It’s great UNLESS there are wild onions in the yard ruining the smell

I was born and raised in Missouri, and while I lived there, I would have agreed with you—cut grass was awful smelling.

Then I moved to New York State for college, and I realized what people were talking about. It smells like citrus and fresh dew! Not only the smell, but NYS grass is actually SOFT and wispy, not sharp and thick like Missouri grass. I cut myself just walking on the grass in Missouri as a kid. In NY, if it weren’t for the ticks, I’d sleep on the stuff!

    Agreed. It doesn’t smell good.

Doesn’t really smell that strong to me. Not good or bad to me.

The smell of grass makes me feel nauseated. It doesn’t smell “fresh” or “sweet” to me. Gives me a headache, sadly.

i like the smell if its like a light trim, but if the lawn was somewhat damp or super long and its a super potent smell then hell nah

It just smells like summer. Unless you leave the clippings in the bag for a couple of weeks. Then it smells like a porta potty in Hell’s football stadium.

I don’t like or dislike it.

That smell is the chemical the grass emits warning other grass they gonna get cut

I love the smell of fresh cut grass! I even have fresh cut grass scented oil for my diffuser. It is extremely expensive, BTW, to get the pure oil, so I couldn’t be the only one that loves it.

God I love the smell of it. It reminds me of raw onions
