The terms “thin hair” and “fine hair” drive me crazy

r/

“Thin hair”and “fine hair” seem to refer to either texture or volume, depending on which product I’m looking at. I have thick hair with a lot of fine strands that tangle a lot, so I’m never sure whether the manufacturer is referring to my hair. Finding the right hair products is kind of a nightmare. I am looking for a shampoo, conditioner, and detangler that’s meant to manage a jungle of wavy(ish) hair.

When you say you have thick hair, do you mean there’s lots of it? Because it sounds like you have dense hair in that case. Otherwise I don’t understand how you can have thick hair with fine strands. My understanding is the thickness of your hair is down to the individual strand’s thickness. So someone with fine strands would have fine hair. Thin hair = not much density/fewer strands.

ETA – how does your hair do with lightweight smoothing products? My hair is medium thickness and slightly wavy and all of the usual curly/wavy products weigh it down too much. The only products I’ve had success with are things like Aromatica’s quinoa ampoule and similar lightweight, creamy products.

Usually thick hair means a lot of strands. Thin hair means not a lot of strands. Fine is strands that are thinner in diameter.

Products for fine hair are often more lightweight as to not weigh down the strands.

But you may need to do a mix of products for fine and thick hair because it sounds like you’re wanting to avoid things that are going to add density.

I would look for words like lightweight and avoid anything that says volumizing.

Hairstylist here. You may want to look into hydro rush by Amika-blue packaging
    Or Joico hydra splash.
Thin hair is usually equal to density of hairs on your head.
Fine is for thick/thin ness or sometimes referred to as texture of the individual strands.
I recommend those two because they don’t tend to weigh fine hair down while having a shit ton (yes actual measurement term)
Fine hair but a shit ton has a lot of fickleness to it.

So true! I have a ton of hair but it’s all so fine that even a tiny bit of product leaves it greasy, which makes dealing with it impossible.

When I lived in a tropical climate where I could get fresh macadamia nut oil, my hair soaked it up without getting greasy. It was like a miracle, and I could get a half gallon for $20. However, importing it to where I live now is much more expensive even for a small amount, and doesn’t work the same – like any other oil, it ends up greasy.

And the prescription shampoo my dermatologist prescribed left my hair SO dry I had to stop using it. It’s so hard to handle hair like this, especially if you don’t have a lot of time and money to devote to haircare.

If your has is fine and wavy-ish, look into the curly girl method. I have several friends who used to have hair like yours, only to discover their real texture is fine and beautifully curly once they figured out what products and tools to use for maximum hair health. You’re probably experiencing extra tangles because curly hair tends to be very dry, and washing makes it worse, no matter how much conditioner you use after. Co-washing can really help with that, since it doesn’t strip your hair of all its natural moisture like shampooing does

    Fructis Sleek and Shine

    Shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner

Follow the instructions on the bottles

Flip your head and scrunch the leave-in gently, cupping the bottom of your waves and squeezing the tendrils together in your fist as you reach the scalp, let it air dry

Cheap, effective, readily available, leaves you with beautifully soft / smooth waves and curls

My hair is similar to yours in texture and volume. I have had good luck with Kerastase Curl Manifesto products. They are pricey, but they last a long time
