A lot of people like to treat domesticated animals, especially dogs, as thought they’re fundamentally different from wild animals. Of course they’re significantly safer in general, but an animal will always be an animal. There’s no amount of training or nurture that will change that.
Even in an ‘ideal’ environment with good training, dogs – like humans – can be born with genetic predispositions or conditions that influence their behaviour. Even without any kind of condition some breeds are just inherently more dangerous due to their genetic traits, physical strength and historical breeding purposes. Many things like strong jaws/bite force, aggressive temperaments, and high levels of dominance/territorial instincts, can lead to not only a higher likelihood of attacking, but also a higher likelihood of causing serious injuries, not to mention deaths.
There is absolutely no justification for keeping a dog that is capable of killing a grown man with ease in the house with your children, around your neighbours etc etc. The emotional fulfilment or sense of companionship/loyalty you get from that dog will never justify putting yourself and those around you at risk. Deciding to own a dangerous dog breed is wrong. It’s inconsiderate, stupid and selfish. You can get that companionship without endangering other people.

This is very true. My golden retriever (!!) is the biggest dickhead on the planet and has been since he was 8 weeks old. Never been mistreated and still would snap in a heartbeat
As someone who volunteered at a canine shelter, agreed. Somewhat off topic but I’ve always wondered if some dogs are… well, intellectually disabled in a dog way. Some of the dogs I worked with really had me wondering that.
this is sort of true – but this is also applying a fine-tooth comb to what is essentially an idiom, which imo is pretty low-hanging fruit. the equivalent of saying “well, there aren’t ACTUALLY ants in your pants”
I see dogs like that as a litmus for people’s faith in local law enforcement. I feel safe – cocker spaniel, I feel alone and solely responsible for my safety- Neapolitan mastiff.
