I keep seeing videos of the notorious GSP (Georgia State Patrol) and these fuckers are insane. They would legitimately rather see a driver be killed by a pit maneuver slamming into median than anything else.
In today’s world, isn’t it more reasonable to simply cite cars whenever they’re doing something wrong (i.e writing down license plate and citing infractions into the databases that they’re going to go in anyways) instead of causing a chase where you potentially put more people at risk? If I go through the Pennsylvania Turnpike too quickly, it can be determined I was speeding and a citation can be issued from there. Boom, done. No intervention needed. I know I can’t get away with it, and someone’s always watching me, so I know better than to speed.
If you chase after a guy that’s going fast down the highway and they don’t stop, are they going to stop just because you started chasing after them? Hell no, they’re gonna go even faster now and try to swerve through traffic to get away from you until they slam into something. By simply not engaging and citing from a distance, you can completely take away the thrill of a chase, save resources, and potentially lives too.
Now, I could understand something like chasing after a suspect who’s fleeing after they’ve robbed a convenience store or something, but that’s not always the case. I see these videos of ordinary looking people who try to run away from a traffic stop. If you’ve already stopped the guy, you’ve got his plate, and you know what law they broke, why go after them?

Agreed. Cops do it because they enjoy it and it hurts their ego to see a criminal running away without pursuit.
they usually dont, or stop doing it because its too unsafe to do so. it would be far easier to just wait for them to go home and then arrest them.
I agree traffic stops ate dangerous for everyone involved. Send the ticket in the mail like you do for a toll violation. We know cops can run plates easy.
Most people who run from cops either have a warrant, have drugs and/or alcohol, driving a stolen vehicle or are a felon and have a firearm. Normal people stop when they get lit up and criminals run.
Are you aware that license plates can be removed with a screwdriver?
You don’t know why they are running when they are running.
Plates are not always readable
Plates can be swapped
Cars are often stolen
You need to have a clear picture of the driver driving in order to issue a citation.
People who run are often dangerous felons, there is no reason to think they won’t do more crime and more harm in the future.
Criminals are the only person who know they are going to run ahead of time, they make the decision to put others in danger. Hold them accountable first. If someone wrecks and kills another during a chase, life in jail or death penalty.
There is no reason to escape from police.
>If you’ve already stopped the guy, you’ve got his plate, and you know what law they broke, why go after them?
Cause obviously if one escapes they have way more on them than just speeding ticket or not stopping at red.
Warrants? Fake plates or no tags or driving reckless/ dangerously towards
others on the road?
You do know that they don’t chase people for minor stuff right?
As someone who was in a hit and run, I did not chase, police did not chase.
I had a dash cam and footage of their plates.
It did nothing.
Police told me they could not take the guy in because the footage did not visibly see the guys face and so we could not be sure it was him.
Don’t get me wrong. I agree that chases are generally bad for everyone involved. But also I understan plate citations will not solve all our problems.
Like anything, context is needed to decide when it’s appropriate for these cops to take action. When it’s a low stakes crime like a speeding ticket, I agree that life-threatening pit maneuvers should not be allowed to subdue someone fleeing.
However, when there is a warrant out for a more serious crime, or the car is reported stolen and the driver has not been IDed, or their current driving leading up to cop intervention is dangerous (reckless or drunk driving), then it should definitely be an option.
In a perfect law-abiding world, you could just trace everything back to a person’s drivers license and call it a day, but if someone is actively committing crimes, their plates are usually removed, fakes or they stole the car, leaving no way to catch them later if police back down.
As someone who’s watched a lot of cop videos on YouTube as background noise lately, they usually don’t expect someone to stop when a chase ensues…
They normally will determine if it’s worth pursuing the person, depending on risks like traffic and passengers in the car, etc.
They also perform pit maneuvers to flip the persons car off the road in a safe area if they can to try and stop a chase
I feel like in todays day and age they could just chase them with a drone or something. Still means they can’t just run away and hide out, but doesn’t cause massive public danger. Obviously piloting for a longer distance would be a challenge that would have to be overcome but that feels achievable, especially given you wouldn’t have to be doing anything particularly acrobatic.
What if the car is stolen or the license plate was switched? What if there is a kidnapping victim in the car? What if the driver is trafficking fentanyl? What if the driver is wanted for a serious felony? If someone runs from the police, it is usually because there is a more serious crime at play than some minor traffic violation.
If ur already running from a citation then u definitely have more shit to hide. Any sane civilian will pull over and take the ticket as is, but if ur gonna speed off for a citation u probably got more shit in the car. Or your passengers have warrants. If you’re dumb enough to run from a simple citation when u have nothing else to hide then i definitely wouldn’t want u driving anywhere near me and am completely okay with ur car getting pit and possibly causing injury to you. It’s an unpopular opinion you have but as a reformed convicted felon people get what they ask for. If u can’t do the time don’t do the crime.
yea unless you’ve pulled over someone wanted for murder it’s really just not justified. millions of dollars a year in damages are caused by police chases and people get caught in the crossfire all the time. it’s just not worth the risk to other people.
WA stopped chasing and it was a mess. People knew they could just take off and crime went up and there were a ton of high speed wrecks.
A helicopter or drone chase would make much more sense. An eye in the sky can simply follow them until they can be stopped in a less reckless way.
High speed chases were always moronic. Now, they’re just absurd, in most cases, with technology we’ve had for actual decades.
Exactly. Just wait for the criminals to feel guilty about their crimes and turn themselves in. I mean it’s not like they could be in a stolen car, or swap their plates… Or just, I dunno, abandon their vehicle. Nope. And it’s not an active murderer or racist would just, like, speed off and potentially commit ANOTHER crime. Criminals generally only commit one crime a week.
Then tell every criminal to not flee in a vehicle. If law enforcement didn’t chase to a certain degree, then everyone would flee, the only ones who won’t flee are law abiding citizens. All the suspect would have to do is never get out of a car, and flee upon viewing of law enforcement, then causing a danger to society. And everyone FORGETS the ones who determines the speeds are the criminals fleeing, the officers decide when to PIT at the least dangerous moment to prevent more harm to society and GSP are highly trained and constantly train in PIT.
Does pit suck for the driver? Yeah but fuck him. Should he have ran? No. Is it dangerous for society, to a degree but it’s more dangerous to leave a fleeing felon at a high rate of speed.
I agree.
Imagine your family getting wiped out because the cops was chasing someone because the person was a POS and had a warrant for failure to appear or some shit.
Eventually I expect cars to simply have a kill switch police will use.
Ew, terrible idea about the turnpike.
Let’s be honest here. Cops go flying down the road at high speeds even when they’re not chasing someone. No lights, no sirens — just another asshole driving fast and putting people at risk.
Literally the only thing that stopped the rampant and dangerous phone theft from bikes in London a few years ago was when they changed the policy and police were allowed to chase the thieves.
What if someone is kidnapping babies and eating their heads? Stay with me. This person is up to 400 babies. I true terror. A couple of cops finally spot ole baby head breath who just guns the gas and cops say oh shucks. Next week headless baby body number 450 is found next to a deep fryer and an empty plate in Tulsa. Good idea.
Correct. All they are doing is endangering everyone nearby
