Office politics are an absolute nightmare. We all know what it is like to work with someone who simply cannot do their job correctly. But there is a massive difference between a coworker who is just bad at their job and a coworker who actively tries to ruin your reputation. One guy on Reddit recently found himself dealing with a two faced office gossip, and his method of petty revenge is an absolute masterclass in malicious compliance.
The Original Poster is a thirty year old man who works in a pipeline style office environment. He relies heavily on the end products created by his coworker. For the sake of the story, we will call her Sammy. When Sammy makes a mistake or fails to do her part of the project, the OP literally cannot finish his own work. Her competence directly dictates his daily stress levels.
Sammy was relatively new to the job and inevitably started making rookie mistakes. The OP actually possessed the skills to just quietly fix her errors and fill in the missing parts himself. But since she was a new hire, he figured it would be much more beneficial to actually teach her the correct process so she would not repeat the exact same blunders down the road.
The OP approached her for a brief five second interaction. It was the very first time he had ever corrected her on anything. He politely pointed out that she forgot to add a specific order for their client, handed the request back to her, and let her fix it. It was a completely normal and professional exchange that happens in literally every single office around the world.

Instead of acting like an adult and taking constructive feedback, Sammy took it as a massive personal attack. Later that day, a work buddy informed the OP that Sammy was aggressively talking sh!t about him behind his back. The OP was understandably annoyed but decided to just brush it off and ignore her petty behavior.
Strangely enough, Sammy actually learned how to do her job properly after the brief correction. But the gossip did not stop. The sh!t talking continued to escalate behind the scenes. The office quickly became divided. Half the staff was telling the OP to just leave her alone, while the other half was constantly giving him updates on all the nasty things she was saying about him.
The OP decided to handle things like a mature professional. He walked right up to Sammy and point blank asked her if there was anything she wanted to say to his face. She played dumb and said no. He asked if she was absolutely sure, she confirmed, and he walked away. He gave her a golden opportunity to clear the air, and she chose to act like a coward instead.
After that completely calm confrontation, the rumors somehow got even worse. Sammy started telling people that the OP was actively harassing her at work. That is a massive, career ruining accusation to casually throw around just because someone taught you how to do your job. The OP was heartbroken to see how few coworkers actually stuck by his side, but he finally learned who his real friends were in the office.
Then the universe delivered the ultimate opportunity for karma. Sammy made another mistake. It was a seemingly small error, but it had the potential to cause a massive inconvenience for one of their biggest clients. This mistake somehow bypassed Sammy, her direct coworkers, and even her supervisor. Nobody noticed the glaring problem until the paperwork finally landed on the OP’s desk.

The OP had a choice to make. He could easily fix the mistake himself to save Sammy’s job and protect the client. Or he could follow the exact standard protocol for the company. He chose protocol. He sent a formal email flagging the issue to Sammy’s supervisor. He knew perfectly well that the supervisor had already left for the day and would not check her emails until it was entirely too late.
The very next morning, absolute chaos erupted. The client showed up at the office completely furious because his team could not start their operations without the missing components. The big boss had to step in, smooth things over, and offer a hefty financial discount just to keep the client from walking away entirely.
The boss traced the initial error right back to Sammy and immediately fired her on the spot. Everyone else involved caught a severe warning. The supervisor happily took credit for trying to fix the issue based on the OP’s email, completely unaware that the OP could have silently solved the entire crisis himself. The OP is absolutely not the ahole here. If you try to destroy someone’s reputation with fake harassment claims, do not expect them to do your job for you when things go wrong.
