We need to have a serious conversation about the way some people treat service workers. There seems to be a segment of the population that views baristas, servers, and cashiers not as human beings doing a job, but as captive audiences for their terrible stand-up routines. We all know the drill. You order your coffee, you give your name, and you wait. But for one man on Reddit, this simple transaction was an opportunity to be the “fun” customer. Instead of getting a laugh, he got a venti-sized dose of instant karma that ruined his shoes and potentially cost a woman her job.
The OP (Original Poster) admits right off the bat that he enjoys doing the “classic dirty name joke” at Starbucks. He claims that every other time he has done this, the workers laughed and found it funny. He genuinely convinced himself that he was providing a public service, offering a “nice break” from the serious customers who just want their caffeine fix. Let’s be real here. The customers who just want their coffee and leave without making the staff participate in a humiliating prank are the actual MVPs. The staff laughs because they are paid to be nice to you, not because you are the next Dave Chappelle.
The incident occurred when the OP walked up to the counter and paid for his drink. When asked for his name, he gave the pseudonym “Aneed Morhed.” If you say it out loud—and please don’t do this at work—it sounds like “I need more head.” It is the kind of humor that peaks in middle school. He paid, stepped back, and waited for the barista to walk right into his trap. He thought he was being cheeky; he was actually just being gross.

When the barista called out the name, the realization hit her instantly. She understood what she had just shouted across a crowded store. According to the OP, she didn’t giggle. She didn’t shake her head. She got a furious look on her face and “hurled the drink across the room.” The cup landed right at the OP’s feet, splattering hot coffee all over his Vans. It was a violent, visceral reaction to being tricked into shouting a s*xual phrase in her workplace.
The OP shouted “what the f*ck?” which is ironic considering he was the one who initiated the vulgarity. He walked up to the counter to apologize, claiming he thought it was a harmless joke. To her credit, the barista accepted the apology, but she wasn’t about to reward him. She told him flat out that she wouldn’t be making him another drink. He had his fun, and now he could leave.
This is where the OP went from “annoying prankster” to “full-blown Karen.” He got angry because Starbucks isn’t cheap and he had paid for the drink. Instead of accepting that his “joke” had consequences, he asked to speak to the manager. He reported the girl for throwing the drink. The manager apologized and told the barista he would “remember this.”
The OP says he feels bad because he knows Starbucks workers deal with a lot of sh*t, yet he was the one shoveling it onto her pile. He intentionally created a situation where she felt humiliated and angry, and when she reacted poorly, he made sure management knew about it. He baited her into a fireable offense.
So, is the OP the ahole? Yes. A massive one. S*xual harassment disguised as a “joke” is still s*xual harassment. You don’t go into a stranger’s workplace and trick them into saying things about oral s*x. If you want to be a comedian, go to an open mic. If you want coffee, give your name as “Steve” and keep your mouth shut.
What would you do if a customer tricked you into yelling something dirty? Would you have thrown the drink, or would you have just banned him from the store? Let us know in the comments if you think the barista’s reaction was justified!
You are 100% the a-hole. This is juvenile and there is nothing funny about it.
