Around a year back, I was arrested for simple assault. I was in a jail for 48 hours. I did not contact anyone(not friends/work/no lawyer literally no one). At the pre-release trial, no one had a lawyer and before the trail, the officer told us what the result would be before the trial saying it’s pre-determined. I was told I would be released.
And at the trial, suddenly one lawyer came to the trial and told me he is a friend of someone who is at my work, saying he is my laywer and here to release me. Since I was not allowed to talk in the trial, I was just listening and he gave me his number and told me to call him after the release. And then the trial went exactly as the offical said to us. And I was released.
I called him to figure out who that laywer is and what was going on with this, and he told me to make an appointment and come to his office to discuss further. Up until this patient, there was not a single word regarding payment/fee. When I showed up to his office, he was not in the office so we had a brief call about the case and he told me to sign the retainer ‘if I want to proceed’ and he said he would start working on my case. And I decided NOT to go with him. So I did NOT sign anything. And I emailed him and hired a different lawyer who was way cheaper. And the case was dismissed quickly with no conviction or any condition.
A week later, he called me and told me I should pay him for work he did to get me out of jail. I asked what he did exactly, to which he said “my long experiences and trust from people”, and he started raising his voice saying “Are you saying I shouldn’t be compensated for my work? I dropped everything for you, I have to question your work if you don’t pay”. I asked for itemized bill at this point but did not get an answer.
Later, I sent an email regarding if there was any formal agreement or contract in place for your representation, either with me or the individual at my workplace who may have been involved in recommending or arranging for your services.
The office did not answer to any of my questions regarding the itemized bill or any formal agreement. Since then every month they’re sending email and the physical mail. The only time that was close to ‘itemized bill’ was basically ‘appearance at court’, ‘telephone conference with client’, ‘confer with other laywers’ ‘confer with client.’
TLDR
-Lawyer showed up to pre-release trial, I did not ask or know this person.
-I did not sign anything. Declined the service
-Requested to give me actual itemized bills and to clarify if there was any formal agreement with anyone but did not get any answers
-I am receiving this monthly reminder saying I have to pay this and this office is increasing the price saying it’s because my payment is getting delayed
I don’t know if there is any way to stop this or is there any legal ground that this laywer has to make me pay for the service I did not agree on.
