Now, I’m not saying the remake of Snow White is an Oscar-worthy masterpiece—it’s terrible and deserves all the criticism. Nor am I defending Hollywood’s recent track record of low-quality entertainment. But people who claim a bad movie “ruined their childhood” clearly haven’t considered what it actually means to have a childhood ruined. Unless a bad adaptation has the power to bend time and rewrite reality, these people are far better off than others.
I know someone whose father passed away when he was five. His last memory of his dad was the words of encouragement he gave him the day before he died. That actually ruined his childhood—far more than a terrible Dragon Ball Z adaptation ever could.
In my country, a boy was murdered by his schoolmate with an axe. His siblings and close friends had their childhoods shattered by that—far more than Michael Bay’s Transformers ever did.
And let’s not forget the children who suffer through abuse, trafficking, slavery, or worse.
Again, I’m not saying we should tolerate low-quality films. Criticize them all you want. But the next time you’re tempted to say “Snow White ruined my childhood,” take a moment to remember the children whose childhoods were truly taken from them.

So you only just learned the concept of hyperbole today, hey, op?
People who say “X movie ruined my childhood” are just showing us how terribly fragile they are.
Exaggeration is a foundational aspect of comedy. Even the most melodramatic person doesn’t really believe their childhoods are retroactively impacted by the latest Hollywood cash grab.
The thing about claiming a movie “ruined” your childhood? It’s often an exaggeration for emphasis. Saying that when you had it rougher than most, like, actually losing a parent or being abused, just puts things into perspective.
It’s not even comparable to getting ripped off on some overpriced toy. Like, no, that doesn’t hold a candle to real childhood trauma. So yeah, chill with the dramatics and be more considerate of others who’ve had it way worse
The examples that you gave are more of “runined life” rather than childhood ngl
And what ppl prolly mean that they maybe used to watch “Snow white” and liked it so much, and seeing that being trashed on made them “ruin their childood” (not literally)
so OP, there’s this magical thing called a figure of speech—used by some highly advanced apes to stress a point without flinging bananas
hey look its the time to evolve!
People did that an insane amount with Zack Snyder because he made a superhero movie they didn’t like
I mean disliking the movie is totally normal, but he literally had to quit the internet for a while because so many people were harassing him and his family, and mocking his daughters suicide
It’s just a movie, people are so dramatic
Hey, that can be a valid statement….as long as the movie was “Jaws” and you were seven and THAT’S when you decided to start taking showers…..
I never understood how one could retroactively have their childhood ruined.
It’s called Hyperbole
It ruins the childhood of kids nowadays. Who knew Snow White can be black or brown for the point of making a statement. They should have changed the name to “Snow Black”.
I never understand why people get so pissy about remakes.
Just dont watch it.
Just becaise it exists doesnt mean you cant watch the original. No ones taking your favourite movie away from you.
Just pretend its not there.
It has no impact on your life.
Uhhhh I agree with your sentiment but not your reasoning. Like no one who’s saying this is comparing seeing a bad movie to having a sibling murdered with an axe. That’s just ridiculous.
It’s silly because no one is forcing people to watch these movies, and everyone’s still allowed to watch the older ones.
This is wildly reaching.
It’s called hyperbole, mate.
I saw fucking Jaws in the cinema when I was 6 years old and I’m still afraid of water.
A bad movie won’t hurt you. A good movie can fuck you up.
This post ruined my adulthood.
You ruined my childhood.
The only thing that ruins my childhood are events that happened during my childhood. If you let media that came out decades later retroactively affect your memories, sorry, but skill issue.
I think those new Disney movies should be better because I have a love for animation and I think today’s kids deserve better than to be watching cheaply made recycled material, but it has absolutely no effect on my appreciation or memories of seeing Snow White or Jungle Book as a kid. My childhood is over. Nothing that happens now changes any of that.
Even if they aren’t referring to movies, it’s usually a stupid remark.
