Mom shaming is practically a competitive sport at this point. Society expects mothers to be perfect, exhausted robots who never seek a single moment of relaxation. If you take your baby out in public, someone is always watching and waiting to judge your every move. One restaurant worker on Reddit recently took this judgment to an entirely new and unhinged level, and the internet is absolutely ripping them to shreds for it.
The Original Poster is a server at a restaurant in the United States. They usually work in the adults only bar section but had to cover a shift in the family friendly dining area. Around two in the afternoon, a woman in her mid twenties came in with a baby in a stroller. She asked to be seated on the outdoor patio to enjoy her afternoon.
Everything started out totally normal. The OP seated the mom, brought over a menu, and poured some water. But when the OP went back to take the order, the sheer horror began. The OP admits to being immediately “put off” because the young mother dared to ask what light beers they had on tap.
Instead of just doing their job and listing the beers, the OP decided to play morality police. They suggested the mom look at the non alcoholic beverage list instead. The mom politely declined and said she would take a glass of Rainier. The OP actually typed “ewww lol” in their post about her beer choice. Then the server looked this grown woman in the eye and flat out lied to her.

The OP told the mother that it was legally forbidden to serve her alcohol because she was with a minor. The mom was understandably baffled. She looked surprised and pointed out that she obviously was not going to give a draft beer to her infant.
The mom then expertly dismantled the server’s fake law. She informed the OP that she had been to this exact restaurant before with her husband and child and ordered alcohol without any issues. She also mentioned she had worked in restaurants in that very state and knew perfectly well that no such law existed. The OP was caught in a massive lie and had to backpedal fast.
Cornered by facts, the OP was forced to admit the truth. They confessed that it is not actually illegal, but they just felt personally uncomfortable selling her alcohol. The OP then took it a step further and accused the mom of potentially driving home drunk and injuring her baby. The OP literally questioned what kind of mom drinks a single light beer at two in the afternoon.
Naturally, the mom asked to see a manager. The OP dragged out their manager, referring to him as an a**hole in the post. But the manager actually had basic common sense. He completely brushed off the server’s ridiculous concerns, got the mom a brand new server, and brought her the meal and the beer she originally ordered.

After the mom left the restaurant, the manager unleashed on the OP. He explained that he had to comp the woman’s drink to make up for the server’s sh!tty behavior. He pointed out the painfully obvious reality that he checked her ID, she was over twenty one, and she had exactly one beer with her food. She was not wasted, and there was absolutely no reason to cut her off.
The manager did not stop at a verbal reprimand. He sent the OP home for the rest of the day and canceled all of their upcoming shifts. He told the OP he needed to talk to the restaurant owner to figure out what to do with them. Translation: the OP is probably getting fired for harassing a paying customer over a personal superiority complex.
Even after being sent home, the OP still does not think they did anything wrong. Their manager, their coworkers, and even their own friends have told them they were being an absolute ahole. Yet the OP claims that morally, the situation just does not sit right with them.
The OP is completely the ahole here. Having a single light beer with a patio lunch does not make someone an unfit mother or a drunk driver. Moms are allowed to exist as adult humans who occasionally enjoy a cold beverage. What would you do if a server refused to bring you a drink just because your baby was with you? Would you ask for the manager or just leave the restaurant? Let us know in the comments!
Server is an idiot and should lose her job. She lied to the customer, then tried to argue with the manager……idiot
