Working in the service industry is incredibly difficult. You have to deal with rude customers, long hours on your feet, and the constant chaos of a busy dining room. But there is one very simple rule that every server needs to follow. You just bring people the food and drinks they ordered. You are a waiter, not a medical professional. One server on Reddit recently forgot this basic concept, decided to play doctor for a pregnant customer, and is now shocked that their manager suspended them.
The Original Poster is a server with three years of experience under their belt. During a recent evening shift, a group of four women in their late twenties came into the restaurant. By the server’s own admission, these ladies were an absolute pleasure to have as customers. They started their fun night out by ordering four of the house cocktails and browsing the menu for their entrees. Everything was perfectly normal until the server decided to do some heavy eavesdropping.
While walking back to the booth to deliver the drinks, the server overheard one of the women mentioning that she was fourteen weeks along. When the server rounded the corner, the group was still discussing the topic. It became obvious to the server that this specific customer was pregnant. Now, a normal person would just drop off the drinks, wish them a great night, and mind their own business. Instead, the server decided they were going to start monitoring this grown woman’s intake.

The server let the first alcoholic drink slide, figuring one drink was not a big deal. But about five minutes later, the table called the server over to order another round of cocktails. This is where the server completely crossed the line. They cheerfully took the order, walked right over to their bartender friend, and secretly requested that the pregnant woman’s drink be made as a virgin cocktail. The server did not consult the customer. They just made a unilateral medical decision for a total stranger.
This deceit continued for a few more rounds. The pregnant customer was completely oblivious and was having a great time getting rowdy with her friends. The server smugly assumed that because the customer did not notice the missing alcohol, everything was perfectly fine. But the server forgot one massive detail about how restaurants actually operate. Inventory tracking exists, and the bartender had correctly modified the drinks in the computer system to reflect the missing liquor.
When the women asked to split the bill at the register, the server panicked. The receipt clearly listed the customer’s drinks as virgin cocktails. It was too late to fix the printed check, so the server just handed it over and prayed the woman would not read the itemized list. The women paid, left a very generous tip, and walked out to the parking lot to wait for their Uber. The server thought they had successfully gotten away with their sneaky little stunt.
But karma always comes back around. Several minutes later, the pregnant customer marched right back inside and asked the server why her receipt said the word virgin. Cornered and caught in a lie, the server fessed up. The server admitted they assumed she wanted non alcoholic drinks because of the pregnancy. The customer stared blankly, clarified that she never ordered a mocktail, and rightfully demanded her portion of the tip back. Then she marched off to find the manager.

The manager dragged the server into the office and absolutely lost her mind. She shrieked at the server until her voice went hoarse. And honestly, the manager had every right to be furious. The server smugly stood their ground, proudly declaring that they refused to be responsible for causing fetal alcohol syndrome. The absolute arrogance required to say that to your boss after secretly altering a customer’s order is staggering.
The manager immediately suspended the server and took them off the schedule. She also dropped a massive reality check. What the server did was actually illegal. You cannot deny service or alter a customer’s order based on their pregnancy status because it is textbook discrimination. The server looked up their state laws and realized the furious manager was completely correct. You cannot police a woman’s body just because she walks into your restaurant.
Despite literally breaking the law and having the entire restaurant staff turn against them, the server still feels justified. They went home to complain to their parents, who shockingly agreed with their actions. Now the server is considering quitting before they can be officially fired, but they still have the nerve to ask the internet if they are the a**hole in this situation.
Let us be perfectly clear about this. The server is massively, undeniably the ahole. You never know a stranger’s medical history. Perhaps the woman was celebrating before a planned termination. Perhaps she was talking about a past pregnancy or a surrogate situation. Or perhaps she and her doctor agreed that a few drinks were perfectly fine for her specific body. It is never your place to decide what a grown woman is allowed to consume. Tampering with someone’s drink is a massive violation of trust.
