Those who care about their pets more than other people aren’t evil.

“you’d choose your dog over a stranger out on the street even though that stranger is a human being!?’

YES.

I loved my dog. I would sell my soul to be with him again.

More importantly, I would sell your soul to be with him again.

Someone is not a psycho or a weirdo or an evil person for having empathy for a pet, a sentient animal with emotional connection to them, over some dude they have no relationship with. Being a fellow human does not bump you to the front of the line.

And it has nothing to do with whether or not there is a chance you’re a crappy person. That doesn’t factor in. You’re not my companion who’s lived with me for years and with whom I’ve formed a bond. You could be a saint, my pet still comes first. It STILL wouldn’t mean I’m a bad person.

It’s a human nature thing – when push comes to shove, you value whose who you’re familiar with.

    Perfect sub for this.

    This really shouldn’t be unpopular.

I don’t think the moral issue comes from whether you love your pet more than a stranger. It’s are you going to be able to live with knowing you were responsible for the absolute devastation to an entire family. So you get a few more years with your pet. You then spend the rest of your life being responsible for the human life that was cut short. You live with knowing you are the reason someone is now without a child, a parent, a sibling.

I think it’s totally normal to love your pet more than a stranger. I do not think, if it came down to having to choose, that it is normal to be able to live comfortably with yourself after choosing a pet over a person. The harm is going to be significantly more severe if you let the person die over your pet.

The only person I love more than my dog IS my kid. The rest of the world can go to hell in a hand basket for all I care. 🤷🏻‍♀️

As long as you’re okay with someone choosing their dog over your mom (if you have family) in a fire then I don’t see anything wrong with this mindset.

The main argument I see here is not the value of the human life, but how many emotional connections would be ruined. For instance your dog’s connection would mainly just be you, you would be the only one devastated. If you let a fellow human die, they could’ve been a spouse, parent, taking care of their elderly parent(s), the list goes on.

There’s a study (can’t quote it) showing 3 beings in each frame and asking people who they would save. It’s always the kids first and its women second. Men are never picked over kids, women or dogs.

Definitely thrown someone out of my home before for being mean to my dog. Take this upvote.

I agree, but at the same time, I disagree. I love my cat, but I also recognize my cat will never be able to comprehend my world as another human being would.

I’m glad you love your dog, but you need to understand that the bond you have with another person will be vastly different, and will never ever be comparable to a pet bond.

Stranger on the street or my dog? Depends on the situation.

If someone chose their cat over my daughter I’d have to be stopped from hunting them down, honestly. Borderline sociopathic opinion.

  16. javinha Avatar

Not sure how this is an unpopular opinion.

  17. x-Katiebug Avatar

I agree with you but my reasoning is: when taking all the emotion out of it, what makes a human life more valuable than any other animal? I’m genuinely asking, not trying to be rhetorical. I truly can’t think of any tangible measure for what would make any life more important than another. Thinking a life is inherently better than another based solely on the fact that one is human is a tribal instinct hardwired in our system, but it’s biased and doesn’t carry any weight on a global scale.

Since I view all life forms objectively on an equal level, the only deciding factor left would be my own personal attachment. I would save my dog over a stranger, and I would save a family member or friend over a stranger’s dog

ETA: This probably won’t be viewed as unpopular on Reddit, but to the average joe I imagine it’s pretty rare to find people who agree

Agreed, do not force me to choose between some rando, and my dogs, I actually love them, I don’t even like most random hominids

  19. aqtseacow Avatar

I am responsible for my pets.

I am not responsible for the decision making (and their results) of other (especially those generally unrelated) humans, nor will I intervene on their behalf when I have my own responsibilities to deal with.

  20. WrapIndependent8353 Avatar

yeah idk dude, you had me until the “i’d sell YOUR soul to get my pet back”

i understand liking your pets more than strangers, and i understand you may have been exaggerating, but no lmao trading a strangers life for your pet lizard is ridiculously psychotic

  21. Lady_in_red99 Avatar

Oh please, we all care about ourselves and our pets more than other people. Do you drive a nice car? Live in a big house? Go out to eat? That money that you spent on those things that you wanted could have saved someone else’s life. Someone who is suffering from starvation or can’t buy their medicine. This is the reality. It is not some existential question.

  22. MaybeMaybeNot94 Avatar

Damn straight. I would promptly sell you all to Satan for a single tortilla chip, let alone to have my pets for life.

  23. bookworth_98 Avatar

Your title and your post are very different.

    Title? Yeah that sounds fine.

Post? Comes across like you’re dealing with something and just venting. Sounds a little crazy to me. You’d sell someone else’s soul to get your pet back? Nah man. Really reaching.

  24. l-i-g-m-a-t-a Avatar

This isn’t unpopular. Your pet is your family. A random stranger isn’t.

  25. HereticAstartes13 Avatar

There is no way in hell I would EVER choose an animal over another human being unless I knew for a fact that the human being in question is like a repeat convict, murderer, etc.

  26. OhAces Avatar

This is not unpopular. The people who argue they would save a stranger over their dog usually get down voted heavily.

  27. Odd_Advance_6438 Avatar

Maybe it’s just because I’m not a pet owner but some of these comments are fucking insane

  28. Divinedragn4 Avatar

8 billion people on this planet but I have 1 special cat. Who cares and is happy to see me when I have the rest of the world hate me. Yeah. Im choosing my pets each time.

  29. FinalBlackberry Avatar

I’d choose my cats over most people to be frank.
They have seen it all and have been great companions, more than any human has if we’re being honest.

  30. Eis_ber Avatar

Not all, but a lot of them really are evil. I like animals too, but I’d still help a person if they’re in need of my assistance before a dog.

  31. WickardMochi Avatar

I agree with this 100%. But I also don’t think this is unpopular
