Tifu, by trying to be thoughtful.
So my wife’s birthday is tomorrow May 1. She was out of town on a business trip so I thought I’d be nice and as an extra birthday gift, clean up our standing shower.
It’s old and I haven’t really redone the caulk and grout work, so I figured it’d be a nice quick, thoughtful gift.
So this morning, while taking the glass door off, to clean it, reapply the bottom water thing, it decided to explode into thousands of tiny glass bombs.
Fortunately I wasn’t cut, but I was left with a huge mess, and now our shower has no door. Just initial estimates for a replacement door are around $1000. Jfc.
So thank you to whoever thought a glass bomb was a good idea to put where are people taking showers. The next time I even think about doing some work around the house, I’ll remember this day…
TLDR: tried to be nice, ended up having a shower door explode in my hands while moving it. Immense regret. Estimates for a new one are around $1000…

The glass bomb.
I just need reassurance that you had another gift planned.
1: Knew this was going bad when you called it the “bottom water thing”
2: The glass is supposed to do that so it doesn’t break into shards potentially causing serious injury.
3: This is probably karma for thinking that regrouting the bath was a good birthday gift for your wife.
Woof. Talk about backfiring!!!
Hope the wife likes her brand new shower curtain and tension rod 💖💖
So wait your idea of an extra birthday gift was to clean the shower? Karma really is a bitch. 😉
Oof
Next time just give her the other c word that rhymes with caulk. Less mess
As opposed to decapitation from a plate glass door sure.
Contrary to other comments, I think it’s sweet that you decided to spruce up the bathroom as a surprise gift! No one likes to deep clean nasty grout, etc., especially if they’re the one who primarily keeps up on the routine cleaning (which your wife may or may not do? Either way).
Don’t feel bad about those giving you hell about regrouting the shower as a gift, OP. I think it’s perfectly thoughtful, and I would appreciate the attempt 🥰 (then after learning you were ok, I’d laugh my ass off at the misfortune).
Swing by r/pcmasterrace and you can learn all about keeping tempered glass away from ceramic tile.
Oh man, I was changing the oil before a trip for my wife’s birthday and thought, hey let’s get the AC charged as well. It was cool but not cold. Well it completely broke the compressor. I’m still in the dog house and it was years ago. Haha
It’s tempered glass, and you handled it poorly. As you noticed, it only blew up when it was mishandled by someone who refused to take proper handling precautions.
Tempered glass and tiles do not mix. This is like a perpetual meme over on r/pcmasterrace with people opening their PC side panels over tile floors or countertops.
Will OP learn from the roasting he’s receiving that household tasks and regular necessary maintenance do not qualify as birthday gifts?
Did you put it down on tile?
The amount of times I’ve heard of this happening to people is surprising. Not as rare as you mightvthink.
Some advice put many many many plastic tear resistant (the shards will still cut through) garbage bags in a cardboard box in a plastic tub when shoveling the glass bomb up. Otherwise you’ll get to relive the joy several more times on your way to the trash bin. Yup, I learned the hard way.
“It’s the thought that counts” 😭😭😭
Head to the Dollar tree and get a shower curtain to put up… sUrpRiSe 😟😔
Get a pressure rod and a shower curtain.:)
No good turn goes unpunished!
Oh I know this one! I’ve ruined my pc case. You can’t set tempered glass on natural rock (your tile) because there are micro edges on the rock that create micro fractures in the glass when they touch, then if you apply any pressure at all, it shatters.
You shouldnt have tried to do anything without reading up a bit first, anyone could have told you that a slight bit of pressure by turning the door the wrong angle, especially when trying to remove it, will result in it busting. Also, you can go to Home Depot and get a replacement for a few hundred, idk who told you $1000 but I’m guessing that they know you don’t know what you’re doing.
Are you in the US? IDK why shower panels are so expensive where you are. I mean, I no expert so may be talking shit but…1000? Whyy? Is it bespoke or something?
