TIFU buying a mini-bike.

r/

Used to have one when I was a kid that I puttered all over the place with. I’m in my 50s now, and just randomly searched on FB marketplace to see what was out there. Saw a nice one and went and bought it. It has some pretty nice power, and seems like it’ll be great to putter around the property on.

And then I was making a turn to cut between the workshop and the chicken pen, gave it too much gas in the turn and the front end popped up, I put my left foot down to try and jump off, then it twirled me a bit and I fell down, nearly doing the splits, right leg across the bike, left leg kinda behind me.

Then I tried to get up.

Anyway, long story short. Spiral fracture of the fibula, and I dislocated my ankle and broke 2 bones in it. Surgery is required.

TL;DR – Am old, bought mini-bike, broke leg and ankle.

Yeah, the wife and I rode some mopeds on vacation. That is, I rode one…she crashed hers in under a minute. Getting old ain’t for sissies.

There are a few things I can do better than ever due to consistent hard work. However there are far more things I’d end up every bit as injured as you.
Our safety margins are crap when we’re old

Good luck. I’m guessing that bike is for sale again?

I work on old cars and stuff as a hobby, and for a “pandemic project” a few years back I picked up an old mini bike frame, ordered a Predator 212 engine from Harbor Freight, and did little resto/custom mini bike figuring it’d be fun to ride around my yard since I have a decent amount of property. This thing is absolutely stupidly fast. On pavement you have to lean forward or it’ll pick the front wheel up when you hit the throttle. I stuck my GPS on it and got it up to 55mph on my street before I ran out of room. The brakes are questionable. My wife thinks I’m going to seriously hurt myself on it. I didn’t tell her that one of the first times I rode it I took off out of the garage and as soon as I hit the grass I pretty much did the same thing you did – the rear tire kicked out and I went flying, the bike hit the side of my car and I laid on the ground for a bit questioning my life choices haha… Luckily I was only a little sore and had a twisted ankle. I’ve been a bit more careful on it since, but maybe I should just stick with toys of the 4 wheeled variety.
