TIFU by accidentally emotionally destroying my friend with a meme

So I (19f) committed social war crimes recently and I’d like to formally hand in my speaking privileges.

So I was hanging out with a group of friends today when one of them starts complaining about how she has to take the bus to work because someone else took the car. Tragic. Devastating. Thoughts and prayers.

And for whatever reason, my brain decides this is the moment to go full pop culture historian. So I hit her with: “Kim, there’s people that are dying”
Like I’m some kind of comedy genius.

And suddenly it’s like I just kicked a puppy or something. Dead silence. Everyone looking at me.

My friend’s like, “What the did you just say?”
And I say it again. Louder. Because of course I do. But you see the thing is that one of my friends had recently lost a family member, it wasn’t even like an older one that died peacefully after a long eventful life (not that it’s any less devastating), it was her older sister who died at 20 due to some complications with her pregnancy. It was sudden and absolutely tragic so you can imagine how embarrassed I felt at this moment. I basically just meme-shamed someone who’s actually grieving. Peak human.

I apologized later, and she was wayyy nicer than I deserved. Moral of the story, if you’re chronically online like me just shut up, life is not a tiktok comment section.

TL;DR: Said “Kim, people are dying” in front of a friend who just lost someone. Instant awkwardness and now I’m not allowed to talk anymore.
