TIFU by accidentally playing DND ambience while someone identified their dead friend.

r/

I work in a morgue where we do offical ID’s with police and next of kin. kind of like in the movies. I gently explained the process and gave them some time to compose themselves then ushered the deceaseds friends into the room. and as I raised the curtain I must of accidentally pressed play on my phone. The last thing that was playing? Dungeons and Dragons medieval city street ambience VERY LOUDLY because I played DND last night.

The tiny room was suddenly filled with one deceased person, two officers, two grieving friends, myself, 20 medieval civilians and merchants selling their wares, horses and chickens.

I’m so mortified and I hope I haven’t scarred them for life.

TL;DR phone started playing DND ambience during a formal identification of a deceased and I’m mortified

Today you slightly messed up in a completely understandable way that im 100% sure they didn’t really mind.

I’m sorry OP, but this is hilarious. While the two people grieving may or may not be unhappy about that experience, I’m hoping they’ll get a good chuckle out of this years later.

  3. rconewarrior Avatar

They may be pissed in the moment but can be a happy chuckle sometime over the next few weeks. Especially if they or the deceased played.

If only revivify wasn’t so expensive!

At worst, they would want to take their fallen party member to a cleric in the DND town to attempt a resurrection.

Honestly, there are worse things you could be playing on your phone.

Have we just entered the dungeon for shopping? Darn, that’s a memory, perhaps help to lighten the mood as well.

The DM in me would have started narrating and asked for a Perception roll to ID the body.

There’s more inopportune things that could’ve started playing in that moment. Andrew WK’s song Party Hard comes to mind.

Granted, my friends and I play DnD, but if that happened while one of us was being identified by the others, we’d fucking love it. The only thing that would make it better is if it had the sound of someone with a cart, “bring out your dead…”

My best friend told me the story of how when at the funeral (or wake, I can’t fully recall) of her young nephew, the mother’s ringtone went off, which happened to be “BRING OUT YOUR DEAD!!!” from Monty Python. It’s a story that they laugh at now, but I’m sure it was dreadful at the time.

I feel like while the unintended horror of what you did will eventually become a frequently-told story for those friends.

I wish I could add this to my medical POA/funeral arraignments.

Got a link for that ambiance? My party’s in a city right now, I could use the auditory aid another!

I wanted to know what that sounded like and found this. It could’ve been worse.

  22. 420ferris Avatar

My introduction to my girlfriend’s family was at a funeral for her great aunt. Nobody really knew who I was yet at that point but they still remember almost a couple decades later that my ringtone was for whom the bell tolls (Metallica).

I suppose hearing that at a funeral could be kinda shocking. We do laugh about it now….

Could have been worse, could have been the best of Queen playlist……

its like their dead friends wanted to play a last prank on them.

Bro that’s wild, imagine pulling back the curtain to grief and suddenly it’s market day in Baldur’s Gate. Mortifying for you, but ngl that story is legendary.

At my MILs burial one of the funeral guys lowering her into the ground slipped and almost fell onto the coffin. The coffin fell about 2 feet. We couldn’t stop giggling.

If this’d happened when my mum was laid out I would probably just have assumed that particular room was just really haunted.

Reminds me of few years ago, opened my phone while having a poop at work and hearthstone loaded. I’m like alright why not except it’s on super loud and the dwarf screams “COME IN AND SHUT THE DOOR, it’s COOOOLD OUTSIDE!!!”. Almost died right there

  34. solongfish99 Avatar

It’s must *have, not “must of”. The confusion comes from the contracted form of have, which sounds like “of” when spoken. This applies to must’ve, would’ve, could’ve, should’ve, I’d’ve, mightn’t’ve, etc. However, “kind of” and “sort of” are correct.

I must of course mention an apparent exception.

  35. KouRaGe Avatar

I personally would have seen it as a humorous tension easing moment. There are certainly people who wouldn’t feel that way, but I know it would have been a funny memory to look back on.
