I’ve been seeing a therapist for anxiety and work stress. Dr. Martinez suggested I record voice memos when I’m feeling overwhelmed instead of bottling things up. So I’ve been sending these rambling voice messages to her through this app we use.
Yesterday was particularly rough. My boss Kevin has been micromanaging everything and questioning every decision I make. I was in my car after work just venting into my phone about how Kevin treats me like I’m incompetent and how I fantasize about quitting dramatically.
Here’s where I messed up. I was scrolling through my contacts and somehow selected Kevin instead of Dr. Martinez. Sent him a 3 minute audio message where I’m basically calling him controlling and saying I want to throw my laptop at his face.
I didn’t realize until this morning when he texted asking if we could talk. I’m 26 and this is my first real job out of college. I can’t afford to get fired but I also can’t take back what I said. The worst part is some of it was really personal, like how his constant emails make my anxiety spike.
Kevin seemed more concerned than angry when we talked but now things are super awkward.
TL;DR: Sent a therapy voice memo complaining about my boss directly to my boss instead of my therapist, now work is awkward and I might get fired.

Welp, if your boss is super-duper understanding you might actually get something productive out of this in addition to the devastating embarrassment. Otherwise, very sorry that happened. Should probably touch up that résumé regardless.
I use my phone a lot for work and for every client, I’ll make all of their text background colors red so that I don’t get confused and send messages to the wrong person.
A friend of mine did this to our boss, he worked there for four more years and became her favorite. Good luck!
Just own it. Book a 1 to 1 with them and talk it through. Unless it was personal digs, good bosses will understand:)
Small LPT – I put all of my work contacts in my phone as
“W – [First name] [Last name]”
For purposes of finding contacts it helps me see they 1) they are a work contact 2) they are at bottom of contacts in phone so I don’t risk picking them accidentally
