TL;DR – I transferred a big teams meeting to my phone so I could listen in as I went to the bathroom. Unknowingly turned my video ON (but still on mute) while in the bathroom!! Freaking out and want to die.
Never thought this would happen to me 😠I can’t look anyone in the eyes. I am praying nobody noticed.
Big 200+ all employee meeting. Everyone’s cameras off except those presenting. I HAD to go to the bathroom, so I transferred the meeting to my phone so I could still listen in (I will never do this again. It would not be that big of a deal for me to log off for a couple mins).
Well before I flushed, I pulled my phone out of my pocket to double check that my audio was off. It was indeed off! But I unknowingly turned my camera on while grabbing my phone (pesky side camera button on my new iPhone- I didn’t know it did that).
From what I saw, my hair (I have long hair) was showing on the camera, possibly my face for a brief second. I panicked and then turned the camera the other way facing the floor/stall of the bathroom, still not figuring out how to turn it off in the panic of the moment. Eventually I exited the meeting completely. Camera was on for maybe 30seconds.
I am so humiliated and praying nobody noticed!! On Teams, does it move you up to the top of the list if you have camera on?? Online it says yes, but then later today I was in another big meeting where I scrolled through the participants pages and happened to see someone with camera on, deep into the list. So I am hoping that was the case for me as well, that I wouldn’t have been brought to the front by having camera on!
Nobody has said anything. I asked 1 person but she joined late after my incident. I can’t look anyone in the eyes ðŸ˜

I do this all the time and it’s my biggest fear. I keep checking non stop that both video and mic are off
This is biggest fear with teams, and it do not turn off the screen when we do loud speakers.
When I switch to my mobile, I treat it like a freaking bomb which should be handled like very carefully and even a slight bump can make it blast.
If this kind of thing happened to me I don’t know how I will continue.
Put camera guards for everything and use them consistently. Change your Teams setting to start muted and camera off as a failsafe measure.
It happens, just go to the bathroom next time it’ll be ok to miss some stuff. Its also not that big of a deal at least it shows you were dedicated to the meeting 😂 lol!
Unfortunately yes if it’s a teams meeting (not broadcast) anyone with camera on does generally end up at the top of the screen/list for people.
You need some Bluetooth headphones with decent range.
on teams, it only moves you up to the top of the list if you speak i’m pretty sure. i’ve had my camera on on teams all the time and i don’t pop up at the top :))
If it was a laptop sometimes you have the option to physically cover the camera. Since it was a phone you just need to check that the camera and mic are off. Having your camera on shouldn’t make your position in a list change. You can double check you are muted by asking “Can you hear me?” as if you aren’t sure your mic is working.
in 2020 when all my classes were online my music teacher used to make us put our cameras on cuz there was only 4 of us in the class. my dad walked into my room to look out of the window in his boxers bc that man has no shame. i near died of embarassment
