TIFU by adopting a cat

r/

My cat of 4 years went missing almost a whole month ago and she’s presumed dead. I moved in with my family two years ago, bringing her with me. The worst part is dad didn’t enjoy me bringing in a cat but since she was mine before I came back to the family home, he allowed me to keep her. Well, Eris (her actual name) ran away on the 11th of April 2025 and I’ve seen neither hide nor tail of her. So, yesterday in a state of bad judgement, I adopted another cat to fill the void left by Eris’ disappearance. The only problem is, I forgot to ask dad. Until about 2am when Amazon (the newly adopted cat) woke me up by climbing the fly screen. Amazon is a beautiful little girl, a rescue, and I had hoped to have dad say it’s ok for a new cat in our lives. I asked dad “hey would you be mad if I got a new cat to replace Eris?” And he replied “yes” about an hour ago.
I fucked up real bad by impulsely adopting a cat that I cannot even keep. Dad’s out of town until next Monday but I think I should return Amazon today because I’m honestly scared. I just wanted my cat back and since she’s most likely dead, I wanted a cat to be in my life. I never wanted Eris to be an outdoor cat. But dad disallowed her to be solely indoors because she “took up too much space, cats should be free outside”. There’s a $250 AUD fine if the council sees a pet cat outside, plus now that she’s gone and probably dead, this whole problem is solely on his shoulders for even allowing her outside.
My only hope is moving out and hopefully re-adopting Amazon to give her a life she deserves. If she’ll forgive me for what I’m about to do.

TL;DR cat ran away almost a month ago now, probably dead so I adopted another cat on impulse without asking dad and now I have to return her after work today.

the fun will begin when you keep the new cat, AND your old car turns up again.

ours turned up after 6 weeks missing.

You sound irresponsible, you KNOW you don’t have conditions to keep a cat in home because of dad. You live with other people, KNOW they don’t like cats, and still adopted one without previously talking to them.

Please don’t try to adopt any next animal, don’t hurt more of them.

    This is ridiculous. Move out.

I am wicked angry that an indoor cat was forced to go outside. WHY DO YOU THINK SHE’S GONE NOW. I am so mad, I can’t even type straight. Irresponsible cat owners infuriate me.

Commenting to add; Dad was ok with just Eris. He figured it was ok for me to keep her because we were a package deal. I forgot about him being upset because it was three years ago and a lot has happened since then. I hope this doesn’t come off as an excuse because this isn’t supposed to be an excuse. No one in my family actually hates cats, least of all my dad. He would just be upset that I impulsively adopted a cat. All the cat food and vaxxes and everything I had for Eris was paid for by myself. I’m lucky enough to have a job, which is why I had the funds to adopt Amazon- which, I agree, was irresponsible of myself. I wasn’t thinking. I just, I just want my cat back and I know that pets in rehoming centres need a human to love them.
