Today I was in a Teams meeting with about a dozen executives and other higher ups. My role in this call is to be the Tom Smykowski from Office Space (I talk to the customers so the engineers don’t have to. I have people skills.)
We are all discussing a replication outage on our SQL servers. Our SQL boxes are all named numerically like SEA01-VM123, SEA01-VM25, SEA01-VM69, etc.
We’re talking about how each of these boxes are doing and I’m giving reports on each of them. We refer to the box by its number, because who wants to keep saying “SEA01-VM” like 50 times. We start with our most used machines and eventually get to SEA01-VM69, and I’m all, “how popular is sixty nine?” Instant head smack. 12 year old me is chuckling while 40 year old me is panicking. Awkward silence for a few agonizing seconds. Several people on the call go on mute. Thankfully, someone chimes in that it’s only used for limited purposes. My confidence is completely shot and I’m trying not to say anything else stupid.
But it gets worse.
MS Teams has these asinine emojis that can get attached to other people’s comments. Another person in the meeting added a comment and I tried to copy it from the chat. Of course, the instant that I clicked on the text bubble to copy it, the emoji menu pops up and I accidentally clicked on the damn lol emoji. I am now super panicking and I am desperate to “undo” that lol emoji. I end up just making things worse by clicking on the “thumbs up” emoji as well.
Anyway so that’s how it’s going for me, how about you?
TL;DR TIFU by saying, “how popular is sixty nine” in a big meeting. Followed that up by adding the lol emoji to some guy’s comment. Made it worse by also adding the thumbs up. I, in fact, do not have people skills.
Comments
Nice.
Nice
I’m sorry, but that’s really funny. That is indeed a tifu moment.
Intent still matters. Despite the bawdy outcome you were focused on your job and not just being a comedian. At the end of the month your boss will remember your work performance not this inadvertent quip
🤣
Everyone went to mute in order to laugh. And that second guy was definitely making a joke about limited uses
I feel like I have a different definition of “I fucked up” than 90% of the posts on this sub.
Comments did not disappoint.
And ^(nice.)
Damn… Lol
How do people not laugh at stuff like this. I’d laugh off mute. Clearly people knew what you meant lol
its ok
i asked my coworker to compare balls
TRACKBALLs

Everyone on the call
I type go tit instead of got it all the time on work teams ..
The executives after the meeting
The only FU I see is that when the guy said “its only used for limited purposes” you didn’t respond with “yeah I bet it is” or something similar.
Just click the same reaction emoji again to remove it. For someone willing to ask work colleagues about their 69 habits, you sure do panic easy.
Overheard a pair of teenage boys the other day:
“Hey, 69! Nice.”
“Bro, what does that even mean? 69, I mean.”
“Dude, nobody knows what it means. It’s like some super obscure meme from the 1980s.”
Please tell me you work for NAVSEA so I can get all the details of this meeting
imagine the execs being such stiffs they don’t find that comment funny.
I’ve been known to riff some pretty decent stream of consciousness bits. The problem is that it’s become habit and I’ll occasionally let my inside funny thoughts become outside thoughts before I can stop myself.
So during a meeting between the teams of our larger organization a discussion came up of what portion of our VM’s should be dedicated to some nonsense that i dont remember. People were just throwing out numbers and it was completely arbitrary “80%!” on one side “No it should be 50%!” on the other. I got bored and interjected into the debate that it should be 3/5ths “It’s been a fair compromise in the past.”
That was bad enough, but I just had to add into the following silence that it was A Modest proposal and small potatoes anyway.
