Attempted to steal a bag of fries because I need something to keep me fed. Used a calculator and all to make sure my groceries came to a round 10. But got hit with 11.60. Told the guy I’d go put it back but said “ugh fuck it.”. Security caught up to me and I gave the fries back.
Went home and decided to read the receipt and lo and behold, a bag of fries paid for.
I probably got double charged at the counter. I’ve also issues that make me exploitable. And this was my first attempt at being not good for my own benefit. It’s probably my last.
I’ve lost two days worth of sleep over this. I’m tired, I have no potatoes.
TL;DR: Tried to steal fries. Turns out I paid and handed back a bag of fries that I paid for. The universe is funny like that.

Go back to the store, speak with customer service. Bring your receipt and keep it simple: “I told the cashier I would put the one bag of fries back, but they double-charged me so I ended up paying for it anyway. Could you please refund me for that?” Done. Don’t over-explain. You’re entitled to keep your money for something you didn’t get.

I’d go back with your receipt and say you didn’t get the fries. They’ll just give them to you 10/10 times where I’m from, not sure what it’s like in your country though
What kind of store let’s you check out then voluntarily put back groceries after you have paid?
This is how it normally goes: oh I don’t have money for that. Hand fries to cashier. Put these back for me.
I’d bet if you talked to the store manager and explained your situation rather than being an awkward seal you could have made away with more food than you wanted to. Grocery stores have a lot more wastage than one might think let’s just say.

Two or three nice large potatoes should do the trick next time. Wash, peel if you want, cut, put in water, dry. There’s your bag of fries.
Just go back to the store with your receipt, they will give you the fries.

Check if there’s a gurudwara or a Hindu temple nearby. Ask for help. Most of them will freely give food. Shelter too, if they’re able to.
If you’re broke hit up the food pantry. That’s what it’s for. You can always pay them back by volunteering when life changes for you.
