TIFU by being banned from my favorite store because I brought in a spider

r/

So…I keep jumping spiders. I just graduated with a new degree and went to a breeder to reward myself with a new little friend. It was quite a distance by metro, maybe 2 hours, but it was so worth it! My new girl is so fucking cute and very friendly! Of course that doesn’t help an arachnophobe seeing her…
I bought fly maggots too, for their food. This is super normal for me. The animals aren’t poisonous, cannot escape the packaging, are clean and healthy, with nothing disgusting really.

Unfortunately, I was dumb enough to go to my favorite thrift store which is far from my home too and on the way home, just checking for new cool stuff for fifteen minutes. I found a lovely leather jacket, went to the checkout, and the lady asked to check my bag. Dumb as I am, I didn’t warn her that there is a plastic box with about fifty maggots and a second box with a spider in my bag…she screamed like hell and threw my bag on the floor.

Thankfully, nothing spilled, but of course, the manager lady came over right away. They ended up banning me because they thought it was disgusting to bring these things into a store. I don’t think so personally, but it makes sense. I didn’t even consider that someone might check my bag or that it might make others uncomfortable andnow I feel bad for scaring her so bad. Lesson learned for sure!

defenitely a small fuck-up on the scale of things but still felt the need to share somewhere because it is so dumb!

TL;Dr: I brought my new pet spider and about 50 minutes into a thrift store thoughtlessly, scared the sale lady to death and got banned from the store lol

Some people are just so far in their own head about “icky” that it makes them weak as humans.

You shouldn’t feel bad, she overreacted like a dumbass and the manager also acted like a dumbass, they don’t deserve your money.

Sounds like the origin story for a new villain named “Jumping Spider Man”.

  4. RoastedHumans Avatar

So they threw your pet on the floor and banned you? Sounds like you didn’t do anything wrong.

Is the spider okay? I’d be worried after she threw your bag. It seems absurd to ban you from the store over this.

Keep your paws out of my private place. Aka ” don’t ask me no questions and I will tell you no lies”

  7. Effective_Gene5155 Avatar

    Nah you didnt fuck up.
I was imagining you walked in with the spider on your shoulder or something.
If they want to check your bag they shouldnt be getting upset about whats inside, unless its illegal or dangerous.

Yeah as one who is mildly-to-moderately arachnophobic, I still think the person searching was ridiculous. Your spider and maggots would have been no problem at all if they didn’t freak out and throw it. No FU here except by the clerk who couldn’t control her reaction.

Question: you keep jumping spiders as pets…and yet refer to spiders as ‘poisonous’? My spider senses are tingling…

    Okay so,
She asked to look in your personal belongings, then smacked your belongings on the floor (which included a LIVE pet), then BANNED you?

What the fuck? You didn’t fuck up. They did.

I’d leave a really shitty review and name/shame them online til they agree to unban you and apologize 😁

That’s so sad! What a horrible incident. I don’t think that warrants banning you at all, it was a pet with pet food! It’s not like you intended to release all your critters into the store! 💔

P.S. I would love to see a picture of your new girl, please 🥺🙏

Do they have it posted anywhere that theyre able to invade your privacy like that?

  14. Snoo-88741 Avatar

That’s not your FU, it’s theirs.

Wow those ladies were really rude to you!

  16. pvaa Avatar

Why on earth did they want to look in your bags??

  17. DoctorPicklepuss Avatar

    I require the spider tax

  18. repocin Avatar

You forgot to pay the spider tax.

The Internet™ demands to see your spider! Please include (a) photo(s) or we will all be very sad.

OP didn’t FU, outside of what they said about not warning the store employee about the contents of the bag before they opened it. I would imagine that if they had done so, the employee would have asked OP to open the bag and take the maggots and spider out before searching the rest of the contents.

It doesn’t sound like the ban was for the jumping spider in its safe package from the breeder. It sounds like the ban was for the package of maggots, which the employees misinterpreted as a practical joke to freak them out. It also doesn’t sound like the bag-check was an unreasonable invasion of privacy but a response to concerns around shoplifting – which may have been based on unfair assumptions, but we don’t really know, since OP didn’t say that they felt like it was.

The real FU still is on the shop. If they are having a problem with shoplifting, they should have a policy in place where shoppers must leave large bags, backpacks, etc in a safe place by the register or whatever. Then they wouldn’t feel the need to go through the bags that shoppers bring into the store.

You should at least write a review on Google/yelp about what happened. If the manager isn’t the owner, the owner will see the review and decide what to do from there. No respectable business owner would see that an employee did that and think it’s okay. If you’re in the US, there are laws about what businesses can and can’t do to their customers and needlessly searching bags with no other proof that you stole anything is one of those things they can’t legally do. Even if you did steal, the police need to get your consent to search you, the store can’t just reach into your bag and look around.

Don’t let them gaslight you into thinking you’re wrong. They have no right to check your bag and throw your property. They have even less right to be angry and ban you. Sounds like a horrible business.

  26. Zorothegallade Avatar

Wait, where on earth are thrift store employees just allowed to rustle around in your personal belongings?
