TIFU by calling in sick and ghosting work for basically 2 days

r/

So this all started on Thursday. I called in sick and told work I’d try to come in by 1pm, but I ended up feeling way worse than I expected and didn’t go in at all.

Here’s the real fuck-up: they called me multiple times on Thursday and I didn’t answer. Then today (Friday) they called all day again and I still didn’t answer. So I’ve basically ghosted them for two full days while they were trying to check in.

To be fair, I am genuinely sick. I feel like I got hit by a truck—just completely out of it. But now it’s Friday night, I’m panicking, and I have no idea what to do tomorrow or when I have to face them.

I want to call and apologize but I don’t even know how to start without sounding like I’m making excuses or being completely unprofessional. And honestly, I didn’t want to be roped into coming in while I still feel this awful.

TL;DR by being way too sick and embarrassed to answer my phone, and now I’m stuck trying to figure out how to fix this mess.

You already were unprofessional when you said you’d try to come in by 1 and didn’t let them know that that wasn’t going to happen, and then didn’t tell them that you weren’t going to be in on Friday.

I’d call and apologize maybe explain you were too sick to talk and hope they’re not too pissed.

Most jobs you don’t need a doctors note for atleast 3 days, but they would probably expect you to officially call out for each day and not just disappear.
I think if you just tell them you’ve been sleeping and really sick, what’s the worst that can happen?

If you were scheduled Friday you should have communicated that you were unable to make it in that day. You should reach out as soon as possible, apologize and tell them that you were extremely sick.

You also need to reach out because they may actually be worried about you. You told them you weren’t feeling well and then completely stopped responded. Depending how much they like you it’s possible you end up with an ambulance outside your house.

You’re lucky they didn’t call the cops for a welfare check.

Yeah bro, you should be fired for that. What’s wrong with you? I get being sick, but how hard is it to call or text your boss. I’d fire you instantly with zero hesitation. That kind of work ethic isn’t going to serve you well. Best of luck!

How sick are we talking? Like, did you miss their calls because you were completely out of it, or did you see they were calling and not bother picking up?

So you should have answered your phone or called back around 1pm when you decided you wouldn’t be going in. And if you were scheduled Friday you definitely should have called in before your shift. It’s a common courtesy. Calling in sick and saying you might be in, is not the same as “I will be off until I notify you otherwise”

The bigger issue at hand is if they might be concerned about your well being. Where I work, if a co worker disappeared and wouldn’t answer their phone, they’d try to get a hold of your emergency contact or call the police and request a wellness check to make sure you were at least alive and safe, especially if you were sick and said you might be at work later that day and then went awol for two days.

This is one of those situations that wouldn’t even be a situation if you called when you were supposed to. But you didn’t call, and now you’re afraid to call, and only making it worse the longer you wait. Call now, and tell them you’ll be back for your next shift and apologize for the lack of communication.

Genuine question…you’d rather lose your job than just talk to your boss and tell them you’re sick? Grow up. Jesus.
