TIFU by forgetting to delete my dating profiles

r/

Obligatory this didn’t happen yesterday, but my gf did remind me of it and I thought I should post it here.

2 years ago, just after breaking up with my ex, I decided the best idea would be to download all dating apps under the sun to get back into it. Long story short, all of my matches ended up eithe ghosting me or being green card seekers, so no dice there. In the end i decided that the apps weren’t working out, so i kept them for mild entertainment but chose to focus on myself.

2-3 months after that i got together with my current gf, and deleted the apps off my phone. Well a couple of months into our relationships, she comes in and asks me “Are you really looking for something else while we’re together?” To which i reply absolutely not, I’m happy with what i have. She then turns to show me her phone and it’s screenshots of my dating profiles. There were screenshots from 4 different apps that i’d used.

Apparently her friend was looking for dates on the apps and passed through my profile and recognised me, and proceeded to warn my gf that she should look into it. My dumb ass deleted the apps off my phone but didn’t shut down the profiles, so they were still active for anyone looking in the area.

Cue embarassment and redownloading all the apps just to shut down my profiles.

TL;DR: After getting together with my new gf, i forgot to delete my dating profiles and her friend found my profiles

What dating app were you using? I’ve been on a few, if you haven’t opened the apps in a while your profile typically goes into hiding mode, the profile is there but isn’t active and won’t be visible to others. I’ve had tinder, happn, feeld and hinge

When I’ve met a gal I’m interested in dating and am done with the profile, couple months in at least, I let her hit the ‘delete profile’ button so she gets to take me off the market herself.

Oh so when you uninstall, THEN your profile gets shown to people? I’ve been doing it wrong!

Aww. If it makes you feel better, I made a similar error. I didn’t realize it until
I’d been married for a couple years and kabd been gone from my hometown for nearly a decade.

It wasn’t my husband who caught it. Some guy lost his ish because I hadn’t responded to him and escalated within the service until they reached out to me. I told them to delete my account because I’d forgotten about it. I explained that I was married and living hundreds of miles away. Then, I shared that this happened and started looking for other potential services to cancel.

Turns out my husband hadn’t deleted his until at least after pre-Cana because he showed the priest what we said to one another on the app!

Deleting apps doesn’t remove/hide your profile from their servers

This is why my family as in my wife, son and I absolutely HATE social media period.I thought my son who is now 21 would be into all this nonsense but hes like an old soul he sees how stupid his classmates are and vowed never to even start social media.Im sure people will say “yes right” but when your an 80s baby its kinda easy we lived without all this online bs about 20 yrs.I will say we love youtube and everything else the wonderful web has to offer but reddit is the only “social” app we use ofc we have all kinds of apps but we see and seen what FB,Insta, etc does to people divorces and shit.Nah life is complicated enough I actually have put a 2 hr limit on my Samsung phone (hate the new OneUI update btw) for general internet usage and have stuck to it besides rainy/sick days.

“Apparently her friend” >>> nope, it was her stalking you and not trusting you

I really don’t get why anyone would think that deleting an app would delete the account. It’s literally an account you can sign into from any other device with the app installed.

Dating apps will sometimes show accounts that aren’t actually active, to keep other user’s engagement up. “See, there are really are (hot) people in your area. Keep swiping and you might eventually match with one of them!”

in fact, even swiping left won’t banish a person from the swipe stack forever. I know this, because I’ve swiped left on one of my best friends thrice, and once in a blue moon tinder will still show me her profile.

This is why I deactivate accounts before I delete the apps. Sometimes they can haunt you. I was on hinge for maybe 2 weeks and deleted the app only for my coworkers to find my profile later. It was awkward af.

Why would you not delete it if you were with someone ?

As long as your girlfriend understood that it was a misunderstanding and didn’t freak out and realised there is no issue here, I think this is ok and not a fuck up. I mean it’s understandable to not know that simply uninstalling the app is not enough.

I used to use tinder on my browser sometimes so no deleting the app won’t remove your account. But it usually should hide your account after a while of inactivity, I did get a notification that they would permanently delete my account after a year of not using it, which is a bummer because my gf and I would go and see our old messages on the app from when we met
