TIFU by leaving my wallet 130 miles away

r/

I live in one major city in my midwestern state and I have to travel to the state capitol 130 miles away for a training for work. I had to leave extra early to be on time. Somehow, in my haste, I forgot my wallet back at my apartment in the first city. I didn’t realize until I was about halfway to the capitol. I checked my mileage range and I realized I would have enough gas to get to the city but not back home. I’m also diabetic and I had no cash or card to buy lunch. Visions of myself passed out in a ditch by the side of the road flashed before my eyes.

My first thought was to use my Aldi grocery cert quarters to pay for gas. Maybe ask someone at the training for cash. But then I had the bright idea to google if gas stations take Venmo or Google pay (I am 30, but technology eludes me). Thank Goddess they did. I was able to gas and lunch 😮‍💨

TL;DR TIFU by forgetting my wallet and having to use the Venmo account I only have for office birthday card collections to pay for gas in a strange city far from home.

It might be a good idea to have Apple Pay with Apple Card or another credit card on Android pay or Samsung pay for emergencies such as being stuck far from home without your wallet.

If it makes you feel better, I found my sister’s purse in my trucks center console, days after I drove 450 miles back home.

She put it in there after we went out hiking and forgot about it.

Her truck keys, her business office keys, all the things.

Sure, today you fucked up. But you were also a quick-witted problem solver and so incredibly lucky. Congrats! My mother would tell you to buy a lotto ticket.

I left my wallet at a gas station on a 16 hour road trip down the road I realize. I had to turn back around drive 2 hours back to get my wallet then continue continue the next 14 hours. Turned a 16 hour trip into a 20 hour trip.

I left my only ATM card in a machine in Thailand on the first day of my trip. Went back the next morning but they said it was already shredded. Had to bum money off of my mom via Western Union because not everywhere takes credit cards. Lesson learned: don’t leave card in ATM machine, and take two+ cards from different banks just in case you have issues with one bank.

I keep low winning lotto scratch cards in my car just in case I too forget my wallet. Also having some cash in the glove box helps, but more likely to spend that outside an emergency.

I’ll be honest and I haven’t carried a wallet or cards for a while now. After discovering the magic of my apple wallet on my phone. Now I’d be truly f-Ed if I lost my phone or it died so I always have a charger in hand lol.

I realized I had forgotten my passport and all other ID at home only after driving 14 hours. The problem was that I was flying back, and for that I definitely needed ID.

Since I did have some time, I solved it by sending keys to a friend who went to my place to get the passport and who sent it by a family member of his who happened to be traveling to a place that wasn’t too much out of the way back.

In my old age, for some reason, I’ve begun to worry about being in a position of needing cash but not having any or having a means to get some. I’ve squirreled away a solid chunk in both my car and at home and have gone so far as wearing a money belt with a good amount in it. (And my heirs know all of the locations.). You might want to consider the same.
