TIFU by letting my cat see freedom for the first time.

r/

This is pretty funny to me but it is torture for me now.

A couple days ago I let my cat outside in the yard,no leash,no being held, just let him run around. He LOVED it. When I put him back on our porch, he ran right down the steps. It was really cute and fun to play with him.

However.. I took him inside and then..it happened. He screamed. He didn’t stop. It went on and on for hours at a time. 0.5 second intervals between 15 second long meows. It was never ending. So, I made a grave mistake. I let him back outside. For 20 minutes he played in the grass and rubbed against the concrete.
I let him in. He try to run. I close the screen door quickly. He jump on the screen door and rip holes in it. He wasn’t going to give up. I close my front door now so he can’t escape.

That didn’t stop him. He screamed. This time, 1 second intervals between 30 second screams. I don’t even know if that’s possible. It is 10:30. He not stopped at all. Not even once. All I can hear is the meowing AND moawing. I can hear him tearing the paint off of my front door. I’m scared.

EDIT: i’m getting his neutered. that will teach him a lesson.

TL;DR: I let my cat outside for the first time and he is persistent to go back out.

EDIT 2: I would never let my cat outside my yard. I supervise him at all times, and i am out there with him. I have a really tall fence and fence gate that he has no way of getting out of.

The title should be “TIL My cat is my prisoner”

Build a cat area for him so that he can access the outside but not run wild.

Oh man, rule number one is don’t let your cat train you.

    Aaaaaaahahhahahahhahahaha

    You fool!

You now have an indoor-outdoor cat, accept your fate 😝

I built a big cat patio with access from the basement window for times when I couldn’t supervise my cats outside. It was a huge success. It had a door that I could leave open and the cats often lounged in there even when they were free to go out.

Either take him for walks, or set up an outdoor cat play area that’s fully enclosed. Don’t let your cat be an indoor/outdoor cat, because that’s how cats get hurt/killed, not to mention the effects on the local wildlife.

Yeah, this is why I decided not to leash train my cat. I don’t want him trying to run outside all the time. Cats are a massive problem to the local wildlife where I live.

Squirter him in the face with water when he meows like that. Train him.

I had the opposite experience, mine was always trying to make a break for the door so I got him a cat leash and took him outside. 5 minutes of staring in terror at the cars driving past and literally not moving and we went back inside and he never tried to go out again lol

Had the same issue, even though he was on a leash. When he came back home he screamed non stop for a cat he got obsessed with and we took him to get neutered two days after (it was wednesday, first we got an appointment for saturday then we couldnt take it anymore so we begged the vet for a place on friday) with three hours of sleep in total. He did not sleep at all, maybe 15 minutes because he woke himself up by meowing in his sleep. Be careful he might spray a lot till you get him neutered

Edit: my story if you wanna check it out lol

Now you did it! I’ve trained mine to stay in the yard. It is very small so I can keep track of them. I put a collar with a bell on it to hear them move around. When they were younger I put a 6’ leash on them to drag around, I could see where they were. They have their favorite spots they settle down in

    Neuter him immediately.

make a catio for him. Best of both worlds.

Same thing happened when I gave my cat Doritos thinking he would sniff it and go away like he does with all my other food

Whelp, time to construct yourself a catio. There’s a lot of fun possibilities, looks really fun to plan too!

I feel you. My girl has been fully indoors for the last 3 years, but got out for a day about two weeks ago. Despite finding her terrified (and thankfully unharmed), she’s now determined to door-dash even faster and begs at the door for another adventure.

I made the same mistake recently. The more time Milo spends inside, the less he demands to go out. Take him outside and back in, and the screaming starts. Lucky for me, he’s not destroying anything.

My cat did the same thing, now all day he screams about how bored he is. He does forget about the walks in the wintertime, but he seems more enriched when we resume walks

    Your 2nd edit is cute

He will find his way out

My cats love going outside. They also know they’re not allowed to eat birds. Rats and mice are fair game. They climb the fence, shed and house roof, trees, you name it, they’ll climb it.

Funniest is the time they first skitz up a tree then go HALP HOW DO I GET DOWN

They’ll pretty much ALWAYS come back for dinnertime, without fail
