TIFU by not checking Reddit before eating dried apricots.

r/

So TIFU.
There was a post I’ve just now seen from 10 months ago posted in this subreddit. It mentioned about not realising that eating dried apricots were similar to eating prunes.
I couldn’t comment on the post so made my own to say OH MY GOSH. Do not eat half a bag of dried apricots in one sitting!
To clarify what the previous poster said ‘4-5 max’.

It’s my one day off this week and I’ve spent the last two hours feeling a bit funny and have had to hang up the phone on my dad to make it to the bathroom in time.

If you’re reading this in the future not knowing why you’ve experienced the same it’s because apricots are super high in fibre and other stuff that’s good in SMALL doses. Some of the properties mean that liquid is sent to your digestive area and makes it pretty hard to store what your body’s been cooking.

I hope you’re having a better day than me haha.

TL;DR – I ate half a bag of dried apricots and am stuck on the toilet.

Look at it this way. You saved money doing a cleanse. Who needs synthetic laxatives

Relatable, I did this with like a lb of raw cashews and I was in so much pain (from the irritant/toxins (probably wrecking my kidneys and gut) not from pooping)

“no reading Reddit” is never mistake.

  4. zhilia_mann Avatar

    Yeah…

I have a cattle dog that loves dried apricots. She’s convinced she could eat them by the pound.

She once had a handful before laying down in her crate for a nap. Within three minutes the smell was overwhelming. I spent the next hour cleaning her, her blankets, her crate, the floor, the wall….

This is basically true of any dried fruit. They’re also dense in calories. It’s trail food, not sitting at a desk food. Adding in some protein and fat from nuts and having plenty of water to help keep from overeating is a good idea.

  6. becausefrog Avatar

Unlike many other fruits, apricots are dried whole. When you eat one piece you are eating an entire apricot.

I have to keep reminding myself of this whenever I have dried apricots, otherwise I’d make the same mistake.

This is true of pretty much any fruit, dried or not. If you eat too much of it, the fibre and fructose will give your guts a bad time. The difference between dried fruit and regular is that regular fruit will generally fill you up before you reach that point. Dried fruit will not.

Omg I’m so sorry. If it makes you feel better, I learned this the hard way the day I went away on a weekend group trip with friends and someone I was dating 😂

  9. littlemacaron Avatar

Omg I am currently eating dried apricots from Trader Joe’s lemme put this bag down right away

How big is one bag of dried fruits in the us? Here in the EU it’s like 2-300 grams at a maximum

  11. mrsjon01 Avatar

I did this once too and ate an entire bag, like 8 ounces/250 grams, because they are so delicious. Oops!

I’m one of those people that can eat an insane amount of prunes or apricots and really not notice any change in bowel habit. I’m almost certain I’ve eaten like 2 cups of prunes and still been constipated the next day. And no I don’t currently need to see a doctor for that.

  13. Throwawaylife1984 Avatar

I regularly eat a bag of dried fruit. It’s one of my favourite snacks

  14. Parma_Violence_ Avatar

I made this mistake. My mum had a huge bag and id been popping them like M and Ms all morning. Good God..

  15. Bebinn Avatar

Reddit taught me that apricots aren’t supposed to make your tongue all tingly. But I like the tingle! Hubby says not worth the future problems. No more apricots for me.

Did this once when I was absurdly high and they were sooo tasty. Lesson learned lol

  18. Awillroth Avatar

Weird, ive always smashed dried apricots by the bag and haven’t ever had any issues.

  19. ocean_800 Avatar

Can’t imagine the amount of sugar you ate too lol

  20. Schnort Avatar

I love dried apricots, but they give me sulfurous farts. The wife has banned them from the house.

  21. sweetvee42 Avatar

Happened to me with dried cranberries. I did it on purpose cuz I was constipated, but I ended up over-doing it

  22. Downtownredfish Avatar

Did this exact same thing but was driving across New Mexico with the wife and kids and it was after eating lunch at a Mexican Food place. Fast forward to me hauling ass to make it to any spot with a tree or bushes and just said F’ it and pulled over and grabbed the rear bumper. Just as a long column of Army Humvees came rolling by hooting and hollering. Wife and kids still bring it up all these years later.

  23. FergusonTheCat Avatar

Y’all need to eat more fiber. Apricots shouldn’t be rocking your world like this lol

  24. sharpcheddar3 Avatar

I’ve done this before and also learned the hard way.

  25. tiggylizzy Avatar

Haha im eating them because I want to poop

  26. Drink15 Avatar

Why would you need to check Reddit?

  27. orangutanDOTorg Avatar

I’ve eaten a whole tray full and not had that issue. I’ve also pounded a liter of prune juice on a date and whooo boy that was an experience.

*dare, not date, but I’ll leave it bc it would be an even worse story

  28. dunncrew Avatar

At least buy Turkish apricots. So much better than sulphur coated bright orange ones.

  29. cultist_cuttlefish Avatar

Do people here really have such Fibre deficient diets that dry apricots destroy they vowels?

  30. ricketyboness Avatar

I’ve had a whole bag in one sitting before and I’m fine? I’ve eaten so many in the past I’ve never had issues; I didn’t realize this was a problem omg 😭

  31. Manda_Pandaaa Avatar

Oof! I felt this!! They are so good and so hard to put down. I’ve done that too and the aftermath is terrible. Silver lining though, at least you know your colon is cleared 🤣

  32. ewoknub Avatar

Do dried apples have the same effect?

  33. rodimus147 Avatar

My dad and I loved dried apricots. When he got sick with cancer, I was his only caregiver.

He ate some dried apricots and then puked in the car. Orange puke was everywhere. On the seats, on the console. But the worst was it got in the AC vents. I spent 2 hours cleaning up orange puke. I haven’t had a dried apricot since.

  34. haraldone Avatar

I love apricots, but I limit myself to one or two.

  35. obi-whine-kenobi Avatar

My rule of thumb for any dehydrated food item is if I won’t eat the same amount fresh, don’t eat it dried. If for nothing other than the sugar content.

  36. veron1964 Avatar

Oh no, rookie mistake! Always check Reddit before trying anything sketchy like that!

  37. Lemurjeopice Avatar

Got it, maximum is 4-5 bags.

  38. coyote_prophet Avatar

I’ve eaten myself into Apricot Suffering multiple times in my life and am guaranteed to do it again. Fresh or dried. Store or home. Rain or shine. In a box or with a fox. I’m like a chocolate lab left alone with a sock drawer. Straight up Defcon Dingo Baby Territory.

    They’re just so good.

Most people in developed countries have a fiber deficiency. If you eat a lot of fruit and veggies regularly, the gastric disturbances will stop, and your turds will start looking like perfect little brown Hindenburgs.
