TIFU by not paying attention whilst chopping a sausage

r/

Literally happened about an hour ago.

I had finished dinner, and my kids were getting ready for bed. I had bought some Chinese radishes to make radish cakes, but left them in the fridge for a few weeks now. They’re all soft now, so decided I need to make it now.

Well the recipe calls for diced Chinese sausages. If you know these sausages, you know they’re hard, dry, and hard to cut. So I was cutting and I’m usually very careful, but today, my wife was talking to me and the sausage rolled over and FLASH!

I notice a piece of flesh colored thing on the cutting board and feel the pain at the same time. I just sliced off the top of my thumb.

Called an ambulance and here I am waiting for X-rays to make sure I didn’t cut into the bone.

Good news is that I’ve already hit my insurance out of pocket max due to stage 4 melanoma, so no more money.

TL;DR – wasn’t paying attention while cooking and sliced off the tip of my thumb

I’ve done this chopping garlic while watching football. Index finger, though, not my thumb

Oof. My dad sliced the tip of all of his fingers off with a mandoline once. He came in very calmly and said he needed me to take him to the hospital because he cut his fingers off and then walked away. Came back a few minutes later to ask why I hadn’t got out of bed yet. He had said it so calmly I thought he must have been joking!

Sounds like you cut much deeper than he did though. I hope it heals quickly!

An ambulance for a cut finger?!?!

My wife cut the end of her thumb OFF, picked up the severed chunk, clocked out, and drove herself to urgent care.

I hope you recover from both melanoma and the thumb cutting!

Oof, good luck. That’s rough, waiting at hospitals can be dreadfulĀ

That sucks. This is exactly why I won’t let my wife talk to me while doing anything even remotely dangerous. When I’m preparing food I’ll literally stop cutting even if she asks me something trivial. Focus is incredibly important…

At some point for some reason I decided I wanted to grate that sausage. Why? I have absolutely no idea. I was a dumb young kid is the only answer I have. You can see this coming a mile away can’t you? Sausage slipped and I grated my knuckle. I still have the scar, and a healthy respect for graters and for that sausage and an extra careful with both. Am nearly 50 years old now and I still haven’t forgotten that fuck up from 40 years ago.

Steam them sausages first to make it easier to handle and better release of the flavor when you cook the fillings.

Put pressure on the wound and hold it above your heart while you wait. Wishing you a fast recovery.

Damn dude, that’s brutal. Those sausages really fight back huh. Hope the thumb heals quick, radish cakes gonna taste extra hardcore now.
