TIFU by using my husband’s electric shaver on my cat

r/

I (29F) have a fluffy long-haired cat who hates grooming. Her fur mats easily, especially around her rear, and she absolutely loathes the vet or groomer. So I had the brilliant idea to DIY it.

Enter: my husband’s beloved, overpriced electric shaver that he uses to maintain his majestic beard. I figured, hey, hair is hair, right?

WRONG.

Mid-trim, my cat flipped out and bolted, dragging the shaver cord across the room, knocking over a lamp and a coffee mug in the process. The shaver flew, hit the wall, and died with a final pathetic buzz. The cat now looks like she got into a fight with a lawnmower.

Worse? Husband comes home, goes to shave, turns it on and it smells like burnt cat butt. He asked what happened. I panicked and told him the motor “just gave out.”

Then he finds a tiny chunk of cat hair still stuck in the blades.

I confessed. He’s mostly just disturbed. I owe him a new shaver and the cat owes me an apology.

TL;DR: Used my husband’s expensive shaver to trim my cat. Killed the shaver, traumatized the cat, exposed myself as a liar.

Why did you decide to use his shaver in the first place? It’s his shaver. (Genuine Question. Just feels like you broke their thing for no reason.)

During lockdown, my daughter and I had the genius idea of using her partner’s shaver to tidy up the dog. It did not end well for either the dog or the shaver! I have a new found respect for groomers after that!

Next time, I recommend doing this in a closed bathroom to avoid the cat bolting like that.

It’s so hard when they’ve got mats and you know the groomer will terrify them. I just had to shave half of one of my cats this weekend and she looks like she lost a fight with a lawnmower. (No blood, just a bad trim.)

And pick up a separate shaver for the cat, LOL!

I mean, this was predictable. Cats hate sudden new experiences.

You can slowly acclimate a cat to having their fur trimmed by introducting the electric trimmer slowly, but just immediately going for it is a recipe for disaster.

I’d recommend some guides on slow desensitation training or clicker training to understand how to do this.

You need an animal hair trimmer. Animal hair is much thicker than human hair. Your cat needs a trimmer with ceramic blades because cats have extremely delicate skin which can easily get abraded.

Your husband deserves a new trimmer and an apology.
