Got sucked into those “hybrid athlete” reels, dudes who lift heavy and ran marathons while casually smoke weed like it’s performance-enhancing. I’ve been hitting the gym for quite a while and I barely drink or smoke, but curiosity won. Bought a THC pen, took a few hits before my session, felt chill. It hadn’t hit much, so I stepped outside, puffed again, then went back in. The gym was packed, peak hours, every bench and mirror taken.
Went and started my life on the smith machine for some incline press and Mid-set, the high hit like a truck. Forgot how to count reps (and I was only supposed to be counting till 8). Arms went numb. I just laid there, pinned under the bar, spaced out and surrounded by people. Too high and too embarrassed to call for help. Luckily, a guy noticed me frozen and quietly asked, “You need help?” I nodded, he lifted the bar, I muttered thanks, grabbed my flask, and dipped without looking back. After that experience, I’m honestly baffled how those guys perform while high. One thing’s for sure, this hybrid athlete life ain’t for me.
TL;DR: Got high in a packed gym trying to be a “hybrid athlete,” forgot how to count, got stuck under the smith machine, had to be rescued. Never again.

there isnt really that much evidence being high can be a performance enhancer, some people claim it helps them focus while working out or ignoring the pain or sore muscles so they can lift longer. science doesnt really say one thing or another about it, other than it might make exercise more enjoyable when your high.

You smoked way too much bro. Let the first couple hits settle in. You got zoinked-on-the-couch levels of high. Just get a nice, small, pleasant high. No need to be absolutely blasted
I’m not sure about weightlifting, but I love smoking weed before I run or get on my bike. I’m not super crazy but one bong hit before a 5K/10 K/2 hour bike ride really helps me get in the zone
Well you have to know the dosage that’s right for you. With no tolerance, it’s quite normal to get blasted so easily.
I, on the other hand, have been using THC for about… 20 years now so I almost can’t get that high. If I do, I know something is wrong.
I use a tincture and it says dosage should be 0.1 mL. I regularly take 1-2 mL because I feel nothing with 0.1 and I tried all the increments in between.
If you don’t smoke much, a THC pen is not the way to go. Concentrate is so much more potent than flower. If you don’t like to actually smoke, I would try a mild gummy.
I’ve tried a few times, but it’s so hard to know if I’ve pushed myself enough or if I’m using the right form. It also feels like the opposite of pre workout. I’ve never eaten an edible and had the urge to pump out 50 push ups
You gotta get to the level of high where you think you can feel every muscle fiber growing inside you. Not so high that you’re questioning time itself.

I take 10mg gummies before lifting sometimes. I get the best workouts in. I can feel every muscle fiber and intense focus.
They have built up the tolerance lol you almost died haha
I trail run, mountain bike and do HIIT with edibles. Couldn’t manage the long runs up those grueling hills on feet or bike without. It’s an ADHD thing for me.
It is helpful if you use it to zone out and focus on contracting the muscle. I have add though so

Do you smoke outside of working out? I would never recommend a fish whistle as a first introduction to marijuanas….those things can blast even the most veteran of smokers
After a few drinks one nice Saturday afternoons in Memphis, I decided I needed to go on a run. Since I have had worse idea, I figured what could it hurt. I laced up, stretched out and set out on my jog. All went relatively well until I rounded the last corner of the run at one of the busier intersections in the city. I completely ate it in front of better part of 50 cars – all 6’6″ of me taking the slowest tumble ever. The best I could do was tuck and roll, get up and get back to jogging like it was completely normal. To say the least, I only work out sober now.
The following “phase” system has been studied extensively.
Phase I: go to gym un-high, start workout, continue 20-30 minutes or until you get into a groove
Phase II: step outside, administer low dose cannabinoids
Phase III: resume workout, 4 hours will go by before you even know it and you still won’t want to stop.

Take just a few puffs when you smoke and lift, it’s great for creative workouts and mind/muscle connection.
I love working out after a few hits off a each or j , just made the interactions with strangers easier for me.

It’s generally not good for your heart health to do sports after smoking weed and a lot of people do not consider that
Big difference in Sativa’s and Indicas. The indacouch can make your brain and body stop working. Sativa’s can make your brain function without feeling any pain.
And yes, if you are not used to THC, it’ll hit you like wrecking ball 🎶
As an experienced normal smoker, I’ll be the first to say the pens are different even from gummies. The high hits later and more potently. Sometimes I’m still high 24 hours later. The pens are not for first time smokers. If you’re up to it try normal weed. One or two hits from a joint maybe.
So yeah, others have covered too high amount. I think strain matters too. Are you supposed to smoke a sativa, indica, or hybrid before lifting? I’d think a sativa would be better to help the mental, but maybe you’d want a hybrid to decrease physical pain. But I think strains that make you “dumb” and just want to sit on your ass and relax wouldn’t be great.

ya, just a bit too much. Also, my rule is never under a bar when blazin. Hit a good sativa so you still have energy and kills the pain. Actually I still feel the muscle pain, it just hurts good and not in a bad “I want to quit way”. If you hit just right you can ignore/enjoy the pain and get a better mind muscle connection. But like you did it’s.a fine line and too much can blow up your workout.
I don’t recommend daily, or in public gym and as said never under heavy bar (bench squat etc defiantly out when high) great for arms. once every week or two for a fun good push. hybrid athlete is prob BS regular use is not good for gains.
You got too high. If you smoked regularly this wouldn’t be an issue. But it probably inhibits muscle growth because any smoke inhaled will restrict blood flow.

While I agree with everyone saying you smoked too much, I don’t think there’s any reason to go to the gym high if you don’t already just enjoy being high. Weed can be really good for your recovery after a workout and that’s about it. It doesn’t really help your performance while actually working out. I think the people who like to go to the gym high simply just like being high while they do stuff. But they’re experienced stoners who know how high they want to get and how to act while high. If you don’t already smoke for fun then I really can’t see how smoking for your workouts would be beneficial.

Do not get drunk for your first time and think “wow this is awesome, let’s go shred at the gym”..
Also do not try drugs for the first time in public or God forbid in some situation where you actually need to think clearly.

Yeah next time just do a tiny little rip of that pen and wait 20 minutes to see how you feel. Pens are great for figuring out your tolerance and doses. But if you don’t regularly smoke one, as you experienced, you will get far too high with the amount you puffed.
I would recommend trying again, just take it real easy with the pen, one tiny rip and you should be good.
When I read that you stepped out to hit the pen again, I thought “Oof now he gonna fly”. Like others have said, just a little less next time. I would add though to get a workout buddy just in case
I mean it would be advantageous to also be used to being high. Idk if you are or aren’t but if you zone out like that in public I’d practice some more snapping yourself out of it and staying focused on whatever the task is while you’re high
I’m one of those people who can work out high (and I do) but it’s not because I want to be a “hybrid athlete,” it’s just because I’m addicted to marijuana and have a high tolerance. On top of smoking my own crop that I grow, I hit my pen once every few minutes and I smoke a bowl of hashish probably once every hour or so. So I can work out high, but that’s because I can do just about anything high. Marijuana doesn’t affect me as much as it did you that night.
I’m not proud of it but I’m not ashamed either. I used to be addicted to far, FAR worse things.
You gotta step up dude. I smoke weed and fight people. It takes some getting used to with some more casual weed smoking first but ripping blinkers and grappling or MMA sparring is basically a cheat code for unlimited endurance.
I always get high af before working out, but I’m at least mildly high most of the day. The key to this story I think is the statement:

For me, I feel like it helps me focus (I have ADHD) on my exercise and get into “the zone” easier. I also use pre-workout though, so the caffeine and stuff counters some of the less gym-friendly effects of weed.
Hitting a vape isn’t like hitting a joint. You should have probably taken like one puff at home the day before to see how it’s going to affect you.
Lol real as fuck. I’ve been there. I did find that when I experience a very mild high, my endurance is greater, and I’m nowhere near as achy the next day.
The strain matters
I love running high. I won’t give up weed bc I won’t run without it. Lifting high? Eh. I do it but it doesn’t really enhance anything for me and sometimes makes me a little socially hyperaware/anxious if the gym is hella crowded. Try running high.
I thought “hybrid athlete” just means you train for multiple things. Did you think it meant sativa/indica hybrid?
I work out blazed every morning, helps so much with my focus.
Pens are usually concentrates. Higher (lol) levels of THC.
A run of the mill joint is anywhere from 15-30% THC.
A run of the mill pen is from 60-70%. Most I’ve seen is 91%.
Just by taking a couple few puffs you effectively smoked a joint or 2.

I would also recommend a sativa vs indica. Easy way to remember is ‘indica means in da couch’.
Sativas usually stimulate the mind where indicas focus on the body.,

But only sativa. Indica makes your muscles jelly. Now I only smoke when I hike, run, or ski. Cardiovascular exercise and sativa is my happy place when I’m on vacation

Tolerance is key and your tolerance is low. Back when I smoked, I would take a nice hit or two before my 10min walk to the gym, by the time I get there it hits and I go bust my sets out and then chill in the sauna or steam room while I wait to come down or walk back. You went full scorched earth lol
Id start with cardio when high let the initial buzz wear off with the run then workout
Oh you have to be careful lol. I’m a pretty heavy hitter when it comes to smoking and I have to be careful about how heavy I hit the pen the before the gym or I’ll end up feeling like an alien around all the people and end up having an awkward workout lol
