TIFU in a job interview

r/

Not today, but a couple months ago I (F) had a second round interview for a job I really, really wanted. Bought a new outfit, showed up early, felt prepared, was very qualified. Since I was a couple minutes early, I was invited to wait in the lobby and use the restroom to freshen up. I was so concerned with tucking my dress new shirt into my new dress pants properly that I FORGOT TO BUCKLE MY BELT. It was swinging wide open when I walked out, and I didn’t notice at all when I walked out and back into the office. My INTERVIEWER (M) had to tell me, and he was visibly horrified. I tried to laugh it off, but he was not up for the humor route, and it didn’t land. Then I had to go through 3 hours of interviews. Readers, I did not get the job. 😭

TLDR: Started off a job interview with an open belt.

You were open and breezy… Sounds like you belted that interview out of the park!

I don’t get why forgetting your belt would tank an interview like that… Maybe it’s some old-school etiquette thing and the interviewer was just really prim about it? I always figured there were way more egregious sins to commit in a job chat, but hey, who knows.

I once accidentally wore shorts instead of dress pants for a job interview, lucky my future boss found the humor in it and I got the gig anyway, but your belt situation is a whole different story.
