Tips for long distance drives

r/

Hi all! I’m moving state on Thursday and while I’m super excited, I am dreading the drive. It’s a 10-hour interstate drive, which is twice as long as I’ve ever spent travelling solo in one sitting before. I’ll have my pets (two rabbits) with me for the journey, so I wouldn’t really be stopping for any longer than it would take me to grab some food or go to the toilet. I’ve got a big playlist and an audiobook ready, but I’d just really love some tips from people who have done such a long commute on how they got through the day. I know I’ll only have to do it this once, but since I won’t have company aside from my pets, I’m really wanting to keep my brain occupied.

A good playlist and audiobook are a great start! You can’t go wrong with having good snacks, too.

Stopping at rest stops is always helpful. Even if you don’t think you need to go, you might as well stop, stretch your legs, and let your dogs stretch their legs, too. Walk around a bit, let them do their business, and then hit the road again.

Try to look up where you might be eating along the way. This kind of helps break down the big trip into little trips if that makes sense.

Congratulations on your move. That’s very exciting. Have a good trip!

I’d map it out and plan your rest stops. Make sure to get out and walk at least every couple hours, even if you don’t have to use the bathroom or eat. A lot of rest stops in the US are a bit scenic and have places to walk. I know you can’t leave pets in the car a long time, but ten minutes would be alright. I’d also be sure to leave early enough that it will be light out when you get there. It’s harder to acclimatize yourself in the dark, I think.

I always had a playlist (well, mix CDs…it’s been awhile since I’ve taken a long-distance road trip) and nice snacks and drinks. I always used to take a little cooler with some sandwiches and drinks and then I’d have a bag with trail mix and chips, maybe some gummy bears or something fun to look forward to. Be careful with the caffeine or you’ll have to pee a million times and then you’ll crash. It’s not fun to be that tired and driving. As far as things to do, you could have a hands-free phone conversation with a friend or listen to podcasts, too.

It also helps to have a clean car. It’s so much easier to look forward to a trip when the interior is clutter-free and relatively clean. They even make essential oil diffusers that attach to the dash, if you want something more homey…but that might not be good for rabbits.
