Today is Mother’s Day in the UK, and while it’s a time of celebration for many, it can be incredibly difficult for those who are estranged from their mothers. If you’re feeling a mix of emotions grief, relief, sadness, anger, or even numbness know that all of it is valid.
Society puts a lot of pressure on the idea that we should have a close connection with our mothers, but the reality is that not all connections are healthy, and not all wounds can (or should) be ignored. If distance emotional or physical has been the best choice for your well-being, you are not wrong for protecting yourself.
So if today feels heavy, if the posts and shop displays are getting to you, if you need to step away, reach out to friends, or just take extra care of yourself, that’s okay. You are not alone in this.
Sending strength to anyone who needs it today. However you’re feeling, it’s okay. You matter.
