[TOMT] A near-apocalyptic story about a painkiller that will kill anyone who took it within a few months

r/

At this point I genuinely think I might have made this up. I have a distinct memory of watching a video essay where a person talked about a movie or tv show. It had come out in the mid-2010s-2020 and was about a world where a scientist created a miracle medicine.

This medicine was marketed as a painkiller that people used as commonly as Tylenol. But after a few months of it being available to the public, the creator revealed that he had purposely made it so that anyone who had taken the medicine would die after a specific length of time.

But despite this horrible news, the world hasn’t devolved into panic, rather people are continuing on as normal and deluding themselves into believing that someone will stop the crisis before it gets really bad, even as the deadline for people to start dying is only a month away.

The video essayist pointed out that this was reminiscent of the early days of the covid pandemic, but I don’t know if this was purposeful on the part of the creators of the film/tv show.

Not sure if it’s what you’re looking for but I feel like that was part of the storyline in the MaddAdam trilogy by Margaret Atwood? Specifically the second book from memory?
